Possible Sticking Caliper?
Is this a possible intermittent sticking caliper? I did a search, but could not find out. I started hearing an intermittent rubbing noise from my front end when driving at low speeds 10 to 25 miles per hour. The car drives straight, brakes straight, steers and handles fine and the brake pedal is not soft or spongy.
When the noise starts it's intermittent and it will go away when I press the brakes, but it will come back sometimes right away and other times it takes a little longer to come back. I have a infrared temperature gun so I checked the calipers and rotors when I came back from a drive. Three calipers were around 120 degrees and three rotors were around 150 degrees. The front driver side caliper was around 240 degrees and the rotor was around 310 degrees. So do I have a possible sticking rotor or something else? The brake fluid was changed a few months ago. Thanks, |
Jerry, if the brake pads are dragging on that caliper there is a good chance it is due to the flex hose collapsing internally and thus not allowing the caliper to fully release pressure (most common cause of a sticking caliper).

Thanks for the possibility of the cause. when you say flex hose I'm assuming your talking about the rubber lines or are you referring to something else. I looked it up and I had the rubber brake lines changed 8 years ago. It could be time to replace them again. Thanks,
|
Yes, the rubber brake hose(s). I've had them do as I described in two different cars - brakes and pedal worked normally, but the caliper did not fully release (piston did not move back in its bore) since the line was partially blocked due to deterioration of the inside of the hose.
