Engine Lid Hinges

I have been wanting to make a engine lid hinges that were lighter. They use stock mounting points and hardware.

What is the weight savings? Can the originals be over a pound and a half each not counting lift pistons?

Are you doing this for you or for an eventual sale-able item?

I've seen previous threads where owners have strategically drilled numerous decorative holes to "lighten" the hinges. Seems nominal at best, but it's all about the driver's preference.

I inquired about drilling the hinges on my 911 but decided not to after
talking to someone who owns a body shop specializing in 911 for 30+ years.
I was told the hinges in the front were designed so that in the event of a front
end collision the hood should buckle in the middle instead of being shove inside
the windshield and killing or decapitating the driver. Drilling holes will alter the
strenght of the hinges but of course this was done in race cars where
experience drivers are involved but for a street car, I was told it wouldn't be
safe as there are alot of inexperience drivers everywhere.
Whether it makes sense to anyone or not, it does to me..

OP is asking about the rear hinges.

usually when rear hinges are drilled, most likely the fronts are
drilled as well in most cases.

R style hinges on ext. = lightest

but even those are a small wt. savings

FG bumper; plexi-rear window and lite wt. muffler are what you do 1st

next, Al. banana arms, hollow T-bars; strip firewall and R. seats out

They look very very sexy, BUT i doubt they are lighter than drilled stock ones.
Please post weight numbers so we can compare

doesn't matter - the 'cool factor' always trumps the negligible weight savings - if any- and, as we all know - 'cool' cars are much faster

hinges

The weight of the hinge I made is 185.5 grams. I have misplaced the stock hinge but I weighted them before and the stock one was a little bit heaver.

There would be a slight advantage to the stock one if it were drilled but I think mine look better

Those look real nice.

Are there fixing points for the shocks or is that a delete to get the weight down?

hinges

They are designed to replace the stock hinges and use stock mounting points and shocks. They can also be used to put a 964 lid with movable spoiler on a 911 body.

The hinges and mounting points are different on a 964. That was the primary reason I made them to begin with

Hinge

I found the stock hinge which comes in at 278.8 grams and my hinge is 185.5 grams. There is some additional weight that could be eliminated without sacrificing integrity of the part. Maybe as low as 135 grams

Will you be making these for others also ? If so, do you have a price point established ? I bought the rear bumperettes from you last year and love the flat profile of them !!
