Wiring for SWB gauges

Does anyone have pictures or a drawing of how to wire the gauges on a '66. I'm sorting out the mess of wiring that the PO left for me. The factory drawing shows which wires go to which gauge but I can't figure out the proper positions.

Secondly has anyone ever rewired that whole section (fusebox gauges steering column and relays)? I'm still considering this but have been hesitant, so far I've completely redone the wiring from the tunnel and back including engine harness and the front harness but this seems a lot more complex.

Thanks
Martijn

If you tell me exactly what you need, I'll take some pictures tonight.

As far as rewiring the steering column, fuse panel, & relays...be careful there. When I was troubleshooting the blinker/flasher system on my car, I found some factory wires that weren't on the factory schematic.

Martijn,

If you can post some detailed photos of what you have, I'll help you sort it out. Do you have the L57 diagram?

My main focus right now is on the tachometer and the oil temp and pressure gauge. Both have double wiring it looks like, almost all terminals have piggy back connectors with two wires attached among them some colors that don't show up on the factory diagram.

This is the only pic I have now. I'm stopping by the shop this afternoon and will take some more.

What is the l57 diagram?

Martijn

Martijn,

Our friend Sherwood Lee went to the trouble to scan the factory diagrams. The one you want is called "L57" after the page of the Factory Workshop Manual.

I have been using the diagram that's in the technical section here on PP. The L57 is a better copy.

If I'm reading the diagram correctly have way too many wires going to the tach! Other then the black/green should be no green wires on the tach. I have solid green, green white stripe huh?

So I got to spent some time in the trunk of the '66 yesterday. I have been trying to sort out the signal wires that are original and so far I've gotten the gauges to provide me with the proper info ie tach works (converted for MSD recently), oil pressure , oil temp, oil level and fuel level all give reading that make sense. At least now I know that the entire rear harness I replaced is correct (many thanks again to John C and the "before there was bhkz" thread).

With the engine running the yellow light on the top of the tach stays on. Is this a low oil warning? The oil level reads close to 8qt which is what I put in and obviously is too much.

Rich, if your offer still stands I would like to get a picture of a correctly wired tach and oil temp/ pressure gauge. I'm not an electrical engineer by any means and any visual aid will help.

Martijn

Martijn,

I recommend Excedrin for the invariable soreness that results from bending over or lying in the trunk! Only thing better than that is doing inverted Yoga under the dash of my race car, laying with my neck on the shifter tunnel and legs out the door over the roll cage!

Good luck!

This is the best shot out of six I took. I'd snap picture, download it, look at it, and delete it. This is a hard thing to capture. I think the ones John posted are better.

Ignore the blue wires...they are the fix for some blinker/E-flasher issue I never figured out.

If you want to know a specific location for a wire, let me know and I'll crawl in there and try to find it for you.

Thanks Rich, the picture on top is my car with all the incorrect wiring. This afternoon I'll crawl back in there and start removing the extra wiring and replacing the incorrect colors. The signals are coming in correct, now I need to get the light bulbs to work properly.

Next step will be the turn-signal and hazard flashers. I'm studying the relay fix that John posted in an earlier thread. I believe this was one of the reasons why the PO hacked up the harness in the first place. That will be my yoga session under the dash. I prefer that over the trunk though. In the other cars I can make myself somewhat comfortable in the trunk with a stack of moving blankets but the centerfill on the 66 is really making this a workout.

This is probably a seriously newbie question, but I'm struggling to read the electrical diagram (going through the same issue a tijnes with the gauge wiring). Why on the diagram do the gauges not line up the correct order. For example, look at 304065's post earlier with a partial diagram below the picture of Martijn's tach. To the left on the diagram is 25 (the oil temp/press. gauge), while in the car it would be to the right (if you are looking at the back of the gauge from the trunk). I'm sure there's a simple answer here. Anyone can help?

Simple answer, as Warren used to say, is that the new-hire engineers designed the wiring diagram. The fuse box is also backwards between reality and the diagram. The diagrams evolved quite a bit-- Italian-delivery cars were not fitted with a Hazard circuit, for example-- so there are lot of inconsistencies.

If you get stuck, post detailed photos of what you have and we can sort it out. If it's non-factory you're a test pilot

Thank you sir. Now one more question. I'm wiring in an "intermediate unit" in the hopes that my '66 tach will work with the CDI. So terminal B goes to the ignition coil rather than the distributor?

Thanks.

Thanks. In the Tach-oh-woe thread, it says terminal B goes to the ignition coil. My 1970 engine seems link the distributor to the tach. Should I go with the distributor to terminal B or the coil? Or does it matter?

It does matter, I've found. To the coil.
