removing cam towers??
 

is removing the cam tower straight forward?

I need to get some machine work done, and I can't take the whole engine to the shop...

or does taking the cam tower off start getting too deep into the motor to just bolt it back on??

after the chain housings are removed, the cam tower, with heads attached, is removed as a lump and disassembled on the bench. so yes, it's kind of deep in there for a simple job, not that it's that tough.

What sort of machine work? Do you need to do something to just the cam tower(s)?
The pros seem to remove the heads and cam towers as a unit but you can remove/install them seperately. The Bentley manual does it that way for example. If you do them seperately, install the cam tower dry/without fasteners on the heads before you torque the heads. This will keep the heads aligned with the cam tower. Otherwise, the studs and pins from the heads won't always fit into the cam tower.

I just disassembled my engine, I guess I did it the "Bentley way", removed the rockers, removed the tensioners/cams, then the cam towers, heads, etc. I figured that it would be better that way since I'd heard that the towers can stick to the heads pretty good, once I removed the tower nuts a couple of soft, strategic taps and they came off easily. Heads would not need to be disturbed w/ this method. Don't know why anyone would do it the other way, unless not planning on separating heads/towers. It is a lot easier to separate them w/ heads still anchored to motor, IMO.
