HELP rear noise problem
 

I seem to have a wierd kind of noise in the rear of my 77 targa, could it be the rear calipers locking up that makes that noise? It's like a bumping knocking kind of noise, I just replaced the rear axle's, but the rear calipers seem a little sticky after I step on the brakes. They were rebuilt 3 month's ago, Any and all suggestion's are greatly appreciated.

you have several things back there that can make the noise you describe. Let's cover the basics first:
Remove the cotter pin from each rear axle and re torque to spec. Reinstall cotter pin
Check axle bolts to make sure they are tight
Check the lower shock mount bolts for tightness
Are the axles rebuilts or new? If rebuilt, not all rebuilders do a good job or reassemble correctly.
Check rear sway bar mountings and bushings for condition and tightness.
Make sure the caliper mounting bolts are tight too.
Check engine and trans mounting hardware while you are back there.
One of those should take care of it

often the rear swaybar is bumping on the trans mount. the inner and outer torsion bar bushings also wear out, allowing the torsion bar to hit the inside of the housing. shocks also can knock, especially konis.

Those were some of the first things I did, It just seems that when I step on the brakes it's a little harder to get started I have to give it alot of gas then it starts to move. That's why I thought it might be the calipers grabbing on to the rotors. As for the axles they were bought new paid a pretty penny for them, but you never know I will try to pull them down this weekend and check the condition. I might go out and buy some new rear calipers as well just in case the calipers are the culprit, I guess just another process of elimination.

DO you thing not having the rear sway bar on could cause that problem?

This is going to sound very stupid, but I've never let that stop me before:

Have you checked your interior fittings? Things like seatbelts, window rails, door stops... I have had three cars (Citroen, Toyota, and my '83 Targa) that had wierd rattles that sounded like they came from the rear. The Citroen it was the door stop welds coming loose (door fell off). The Toyota and Porsche have rattles where the window rails seem to be loose. I re-tightened the Toyota up. With the Porsche, there is a "sour" spot in the rail where I have a rattle and the remainder is great. They all sounded like the noise was coming from the rear.

No, this is more like a thump after I hit the brakes they still stick alittle after the rebuilt on the passenger side. I guess I'll just have to keep on looking.
