Possible Build Candidate - Advice Appreciated

I am considering building a long hood and building it into a hot-rod / outlaw. I am not interested in trying to "invest" and want a great toy.

I have access to this 1969 912. This car is a 2 owner car with the original owner having sold it to his cousin, his cousin rebuilding the top end and then selling it back to the original owner. The body is perfect. No rust anywhere. Original paint.

What do you guys think?

Is it a fair price to pay for the car? Is it a smart way to get a hot-rod long hood at a smart price?

As a 912 guy I would like to see the car stay intact. I would think there are better candidates to bastardize.

Yeah that is a tough one. Even if you do the engine it is still a 912, and that is great thing.

If it had just a ton of issues that would be one thing but as it sits it is a cool car on its own.

I hear you but I can't touch a 911 for less than 35k and that would be all chopped up. To get a nice starter to build off is 50+k

Is the price at least appropriate for the car if I just bought it, drove it and cherished it as is?

In your other thread you were looking at a 70k 993 as an appreciating asset , and in this thread you have a 40k budget and don't care about value .

So my answer is to obviously buy the 73 you found for 45 :D

I'm not sure I'm now talking to the op , but the 73 in your other thread is what I would buy .
They make wheels round because they're meant to go around ...
:D

Seems high for a 912. You could buy a 80's 911 for mid 20s, get some RS style fenders and bumpers, put some money in on mods and maintenance and you'll have a better chance at your 40k.

nice car. if you decide to pass on it, send me the info. i'd love to buy this.

My buddy who is going to del his 72T has been kicking himself for cheeping out and buying the T way back when, instead of an S for just a few grand more.

I think the same thing today of going with a bastardized 912 versus a hotrod 911.

Bring me 35k cash and I'll put you in a REALLY nice 82 911SC that you won't have to change out the dilivar head studs, won't have to build a top end, won't have to build a 915 transmission but you *will* have to change the time on the dash clock twice a year for daylight savings time.

As for the 69 912, I've got one of those also. If you are looking for a car with a LOT of horsepower, forget about it. If you can live with a really well balanced 911 look-alike that handles really well than that's the ticket. 27.5k for a really nice 69 912 is not out of line in my book....it's the last of the original 912's and the only one of the original 912's to be long wheelbase.

Keep looking.

912's like that will command a premium in the near future.
I would look elsewhere.

JMHO...

In your hotrod scenario, if your budget is $40K and you're spending $27.5K on the car, you'll likely run out of $$ before completion... As crazy as it sounds: a nice 3.0L/3.2L, welding in appropriate engine mounts, going through the transmission, looking over the suspension, brakes and all the other "while I'm in there" items, will burn through $12.5K far faster than you'd think... I've been there... a few times.

With that car, I think you'd be far, far ahead to enjoy it as-is. It looks like a very nice example, of which there are fewer and fewer left!

Have fun with whatever you decide!
Tom
