Has anyone gutted their muffler?

I had the muffler off for about a week and drove it. It's a stock 3.2 with cat. It was waaayy too loud, but it DID sound mean and fast! For me, it made the driving experience more enjoyable, felt like I was going faster than I was because of the sound. I'm wondering if I gutted the muffler, would it sound similar to no muffler but with a LOWER decibel? If so, how would I go about gutting it?

open the muffler up at the crimped seam (drill out the spot weld or use a cut off wheel) remove all the offending crap re-assemble and weld it all up

Hey,
I have a stock 72 exhaust that has been gutted you'll need to open up the other side to have a 2 out set up to get the sound that you are looking for..as mis is only 2 in 1 out I am going to cut another hole on the other side and see how loud i can get it! I like you.. want the sound.. I have a GHL that is 2 in 2 out and it's louder than snot! but it's all good to me. you'll ne a plasma cutter to open it up... I'll try to find the link to a step by step link for doing this.. there is a French site that has one as well as an american one.. both have nice pic's to aid the process along.. i'll see if I can pull them up for you.. unless someone else can get it done before me.. which would be cool.
You like it but it will NOT be as angry sounding as the car with out anything on it! hahah I'll bet that was loud!

Eric

When I did my sport muffler, we only cut about a 6" x 16" rectangle on the top inside of the canister and opened up the baffles per the plans published years ago in Up-Fixing. I kept the single out instead of going to dual out and it sounds great while still meeting the 93 db @ 50' sound level I need.

Plans are on my website at http://members.rennlist.com/tweedt/sptmuff.jpg

I gutted my cat converter and it did make a difference in the sound at 1100 rpm which is where I maintain my idle.
