Rear wiper assembly: what's this part?
 

Putting together my rear wiper assembly, I notice that I am missing part #13 in the diagram below (NOT #14 circled in red): "round seal," 99904000200. Can anyone tell me if this is simply a rubber washer that I can get at a hardware store? It hardly seems worth it to have a $1.50 part sent from Germany ...

Hmm. I believe I'm missing that part as well.

#14 is a metal spacer, the long one is needed if you have a fiberglass tail and there is a shorter one for regular decks as well

Lorne: I have both as well, as I am converting from tail to tailless. It's the seal -- #13 -- I'm wondering about. It can't be an ordinary washer because there is not an even surface around the hole in the decklid. I'm assuming it must be something of soft rubber to prevent metal on metal contact between the metal spacer and the decklid itself (?).

I definitely do not have the rubber washer on my tail-less wiper retro-fit. Don't know how I missed that.

Since the washer is a 999 part number, it is likely a fairly generic part.

Another thought - if you are converting from tailed to tail-less, you also need the shorter version of part #12. You may already have located that part, but I thought I'd toss it out there.

Took another close look at mine, and the "washer" would need to be more like an o-ring due to lack of clearance for something with an larger O.D. than the spacer sleeve. That being so, I also think it would need to be fairly firm and non-squishable. I'd be interested in seeing an actual part.

Thanks, Arne -- your second picture is quite helpful. I think it shows that, if nothing else, this part isn't absolutely essential.

And although I disassembled the wiper mechanism a couple of years ago when I replaced the engine lid, I think I would have saved that part if were originally there with the tail.

And thanks for note about the shorter spindle (part #12); I did order that part from our host awhile back, along with the 14mm spacer (#14).

Would you post pictures of the shorter spindle and spacers for future references there are several people are looking for the shorter spindle.

Looks just like the longer spindle, just 9mm shorter.

It is quite easy to make a longer spindle into a shorter one....just did it. The threaded outer you can cut with a dremel cut off wheel very easily. The shaft that the wiper arm mounts onto is swaged onto the actuating arm, not welded as the shaft is stainless steel and the actuating arm is regular steel.

I just carefully ground off the original swage, replicated it into the shaft 10 mm shorter, again using the dremel, and then just swaged the shaft onto the arm. Easy..took maybe 30 minutes.

Just to close out this thread: the first photo shows the tiny o-ring in question. Available from our host for $1.50.

So if you're converting a rear wiper from a tail to a tailless engine lid, you need three parts: the shorter spindle, the black metal bushing, and the tiny o-ring -- see photo. I also included the longer spindle to compare.

Interesting. I don't recall my spacer having a recess for the o-ring like that. I'll need to take another look at it. Thanks for the follow up!
