How to remove rear speaker shelf
 

Have a very annoying rattle at the back of the right rear side window. Seems to be behind the headliner, where the headliner meets the speaker shelf. I want to remove the speaker shelf to get at it. How do I remove the speaker shelf? I do not see any screws holding it in place.
Would it be OK to spray some of that expanding foam sealant into the cavity (by putting the tube in through the speaker cavity), in the hope of getting the rattle? I know I would need to avoid getting it into the seat belt retractor.

Perhaps my 87 Targa is different, but on mine there are four sheet metal screws that attach the panel. They are located about 2 inches in from the corners on the verticle portion behind the rear seats. There are no fasteners on the horizontal portion. These are readily visable on my 87. Nothing inside mine but speakers.

Four screws and a single hook at midcenter if memory serves. Pull up to remove.

fyi, the metal clip is in lower middle portion of the vertical part of the rear shelf. about 3 inches from the bottom. After removing the 4 sheet metal screws (again from the vertical portion of the shelf), lift the shelf straight up, so the metal clip can clear its slot.

Then the whole parcel shelf can be pulled forward and out.

If you want to take the shelf out completely, you will have to remove the lower outboard seat belt mounts as well (its a 17MM bolt), so you can thread the seat belt through the shelf openings.

There's not much of a 'cavity' under the shelf (you'll see when you remove it). You might want to check to see if the speaker is firmly mounted in the shelf. You might also try Syl-Glide or some other silicon-type stuff. Worked wonders to get rid of some squeaks from my Targa top.

If you are going to remove the outboard seatbelt housings, do a search on the board for a thread on that subject. I tried to pull mine, and ended up at a metal shop having a nut welded to the head of what became a rounded bolt. The thin bolt heads require you to use a modified socket and a deft touch. If you don't use both, you'll end up with a mess.

I have the same problem from that area , but it's more of a squeek than a rattle. Step one in the process of elimination was to remove the shelf completely. Guess what? It didn't help.

If your rattle stops, let me know what stopped it.
