Post Dealer installed AC?

Was the AC system in the SC's installed at the factory or at the the dealer (in US)? I've heard conflicting info on this.

Thanks,
Markus

The SC AC was installed at the factory.

I thought mine was factory installed until a guy that works on Porsches said that it was dealer installed by the look of it. All OE stuff was used, but somethings were different. Also, I've read that early SCs w/factory air had only one condensor(decklid) but mine has the 77 and earlier version with 2 condensors.

All SCs with factory ac have a front condenser. There could be some dealer installed ac systems, but maybe it's more likely that an aftermarket compressor has been installed. BTW make sure your front condenser fan works and has an in-line fuse in the harness. Plenty of SCs have caught fire when the frotn fan motor burnt-out

Brit: I don't know if that is the case...my '78 has a rear condensor only and is an early VIN for the SC line. Everything looks pretty factory to me.

But let me get this right, because A/C is something I am pretty ignorant about. My '78 has the finned setup under the decklid and a sightglass item behind the left front wheel. Does this sound like a factory installation?

Thanks mightily,
Jw

Its my understanding that there were quite a few dealer installed A/C units in early SC's. I know that one of the more common dealer installed units were manufactured by an Italian outfit. (Diavia...or something like that) They certainly weren't all fatory installed...that much I'm sure of.

I had mine installed by the dealer. I bought a '78 SC Targa in 1980. It did not have A/C and I had the dealer, Holbert's, install one. Believe it or not, it worked well.

My ac was dealer installed with all OE parts, nothing out of the ordinary. Like I said it was installed with pre SC wiring in mind. I had to go back to the 77 wiring schematic to make sure everything was hooked up correctly and all the wires matched, right down to the proper gauge and color.
