to tint or not to tint, that's the question!!!
I am getting a 1983 911SC and the windows are clear. I am curious to hear what you all suggest.

Where are you located?

Is it drug-dealer red ?
( Porsche paint code c0k3 ) |
It is Blk on Blk. and I am in Eugene, OR.

I recently lived just south of RPV and surfed indicators all the time. But now I am in the GREAT PNW!!!

No tint.

A PO installed a not-so-dark tint in my car. I have had the car for 13 years & never liked it, so I recently had it removed. MUCH better! I'm not a fan of tint. But what really matters is what you like.
|
I have tint on the vehicles that will be left in sunlight in parking lots. This will not be subjected to mundane tasks. I am thinking no tint.

Yes, do the lightest tint, it will help reduce the heat on the B on B car and save your interior from the UVs and you :-)
You had enough sun's UVs to last yeah as a surfer :-) I have light in front and Limo on my targa back |
That's actually a pretty good idea. I'll see what the lightest tint the local shops can do.

3M has a UV clear that you can use. All the of the same protection.
You have time before deciding, the sun won't be around until June here. :) |
It's your car; do what you want. Congrats on the purchase!
But personally, I'm a no-tint kind of guy. Heck, in proper sporting spirit, what race car has tinted windows? I live in L.A. Maybe not the hottest place on earth, but we get about 3 weeks straight of triple-digit days in the summer. Even in the middle of winter we regularly get 80-degree days. My DD (not the 911) is a black car that gets parked outdoors. So the car gets a little hot. Just roll down the windows and drive a little faster. Having lived in PDX, I'm not sure window tint is as necessary in the PNW as some feel it is for warmer/sunnier climates. Maybe I should look into that clear UV film that timmy2 mentioned. Perhaps that's a good compromise. |
Yup, your car. :)
Mine are tinted. I have limo tint for the rear Targa glass. Found our it helps when the idiots that drive with their high beams on come up behind you. My rear view mirror switch thingy broke from age, so I can't adjust it for high beams anymore. Alarick, Patrick Brass has tinted windows on his race car. :D |
I use this guy .
FAQS The "clear" uv film will add a slight tint to clear glass , it still looks stock though .. |
I would say NO tint unless it gets parked in the sun a lot.

My black 911 SC has only the rear window tinted and I LOVE it.
It makes the car look like more windows are tinted, keeps the headlights a bit dimmer and keeps the car cooler. |
|
The PO of my 88 coupe tinted the windows of my car with "light tint" all around. This is my 3rd 911 and frankly I never was a fan of the tinted look however I think it looks great if it's not too dark. It's so much better to drive as it keeps the hot sun off of you especially with the marginal AC our cars have.
Here's a pic. I say go for it!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1420387638.jpg |
I've got an 80SC. The PO tinted the windows (he was in Tenn). I'm in CT.
Love the tint during the day, hate it at night. |
I'm am going to see if anyone around me does the clear UV protectant film.

It also keeps the cabin a little darker, which also helps outward visibility in the day, and makes the car look like it's got tinted sides. Back in the day, I had an '87 Honda CRX Si with the factory option rear window louver covering and it did the same thing. I loved that as well. Kept the car cooler and the cabin darker but didn't have any ill effects at night. |
Nice move. I was at the north end of the bay. Tint also creates a monolithic look, especially with black trim & black paint.
|
Mine are tinted, but with only a very light (almost invisible) film that blocks UV and a significant portion of IR light to reduce heat soak in the summer. Even up here in the Great White North, a dark car with a dark interior can get pretty warm inside.

Find a local guy that installs LLumar Window Films - in clear. I've had it on numerous vehicles and it does wonders. Don't forget to do the windshield.
|
I would preserve originality in the car. Not that you're thinking of selling it. But given the insanity in the past couple years on pricing of only slightly older cars, the SC's day may come soon. Keep your options open.

I have really dark tint on my BMW e39 daily driver(was on the car when I bought it). I hate the look. With a passion. And I have already gotten a ticket for it when driving through a small town in Northeast PA.
BUT.....my interior looks like brand new, on a 13 year old car. I like the idea of the UV protection in clear. I hope it works as good as the dark stuff, so I can have my cake and eat it too. OP - In your case, I would forgoe the tint. Stock is trick. |
Where I live, tint is more of a necessity than an option. I actually think it looks good with guards red though.
|
i too prefer the non-tint look. had nearly clear film applied to my 997 s, to protect both my hide and the cars; even the windshield.
|
No tint
|
Tint is easy to remove so I wouldn't worry about keeping it original.
I'm debating doing mine but front window tint gets you a ticket here in CA, and I don't like the look of a partially tinted car so I'm leaning towards the clear film for UV protection. |
If you want a tint that looks dark but is easy enough to see the insides of the car , speak to chris on the Hb tint link I posted earlier .
This has been done 2 years now without a ticket . Cops don't like it if they can't see in the car when they pull you , and like a porsche the beetle doesn't have roll down back windows so I'd suggest a light one . (From a strait-on angle you can see strait through the car) http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps6c4e5c57.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...psdc1e78ee.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...psd613f1ff.jpg |
This is another he has done for me .
On a light colored car they help accentuate the shape , even these light tints are too much on a black car IMHO . I've been meaning to get back to him to get a clear put on my 997 , but haven't had time yet . http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x.../NewWheels.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...NewWheels2.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...NewWheels3.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...NewWheels4.jpg |
Here's another one that's slightly darker .
It had to be has it has smokey glass on the rear , or I would have gone clear ... The beauty of this one is all 4 windows can be rolled down when an officer approaches . Although I haven't had that happen , it IS something you should do . I'd rather deal with a calm at-ease cop than one on edge with his hand on his gun !! :D http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps8602f279.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...psa2b8fd88.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...psfb47ecbe.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps55348fc2.jpg |

We bought a cop's car which had a limo blackout rear window. The side windows were almost as dark. Backing it at night was a major problem until I removed it. If you are going to tint, take the advice of the people above and go as light as possible with a good sun reflective material. Black out reminds me of drug dealers, but that is just where I shop. ;)
