MFI Oil Leak
Seem to have an oil leak on 73 2.4 MFI pump
It appears to be leaking from this plastic cap on the rear of the pump Would this normally be just the cap, or is there a seal in behind it. who sells the parts required to repair? Appreciate the help ![]() |

The cap is just a dust cap, to cover the end of the rack where it protrudes from the end of the housing. Sometimes there is a little oil trapped inside the cap as it weeps from the rack shaft, but I've never seen anything there I'd describe as a real leak. There is no seal under the cap. I don't know if there is a seal inside the pump or not. But if there is, to replace it would require complete teardown of the pump. There should not be standing oil that high up in the pump, as that is above the level where it drains out. Maybe the drain line is restricted somehow?

I solved a long time oil leak using a plastic cap from a chair leg. It fit perfectly replacing the original dust over which had lost its elasticity and was loose and allowing oil to escape the pump. An annoying amount of oil escaped, dripping right onto the exhaust and making me suspect the rear cam seal. I had the sheet metal removed ready to replace the seal when I realised the oil coming from above the cam drive oil seal. Just to be sure I used a zippy tie to make sure it could not work loose, but the chair leg cap was a tight fit by some strange chance. No more oil leak, cost less than $0.50.

Your cap does look a little brittle. You can simply pop it off and see how it looks/feel. Another area to check for seepage is behind the pulley. There is a seal for the main shaft and it can be a source for more abundant oil leakage than the rack cap as it was for mine. Since it looks like the engine is out it is always easier to check and replace now if required.
