Ok, here's the deal. I test drove a 1988 US Coupe today with performance chip. (I'm looking for a Carrera)
Besides the stiffer suspension and better cornering, it didnt really feel any faster or agressive than my 83 sc euro.... after i test drove the 88, I got back in my 83 and it felt like it had better pick up and more acceleration between the 3K to 4K RPM range. The 83 is mostly stock too. I was just anticipating a step up in performance from 83 to 88! any ideas or opinions? I'm puzzled! |

The 204hp euro SC had a 0-100kph time of 5.9s & 0-200kph of 26.3s, the 87 Carrera Club Sport(~231hp) had 5.9 and 23.5 respectively. The difference was gearing and weight. The higer hp doesn't become apparant untill higher speeds are reached. Note the US version of the 87 was only rated at ~217hp and would be commensurately slower.

Having another body in the car will make up for the added 10% horsepower between the the 83 and 88. The major difference is the G50 and chain tensioners. The G50 had to feel different in terms of shifting.
It sems everytime a comparison like this this is done there is a difference between the anticipated performance and the realized performance. The more accoutrements the more weight the less raw feel. My rememberance is that my 61 Roadster was very quick and an awful lot of fun to drive, don't think it made more than 85 HP.if that. The power top on the roadster always worked though, reach back, pull forward and snap. The air worked well too, snap snap and push the top back. That was before R12, think they used O2. Drive a 993 to see if that's what your after, and then perhaps a 73 RS clone. Seems like they all have something to offer, date a few more before you make up your mind. Maybe it's just not time too move. Mrdi |
