SDS or High Priced EFI
Hello,
I am looking into converting my 914 2.0 D-jet 4cyl. to an EFI system.. Yes I know that I am on the wrong board but most 914 owners would rather go for a 6.. Anyway I hate having to use the Djet becuase no one can work on it except high priced shops..I also want to try to put a turbo on my 4 cyl. since many Big owners have been doing for it years with favorable results..Heres what I am thinking get the exhuast and turbo induction setup and if I blow the motor I could always buy another 4 cyl longblock for under $800.00 compared to buying a 6 and paying 3-4K for a rebuild.. But this is all aside the point what I want to know is.. 1. How adjustable and adaptible is a SDS system or something like it comapared to Haltech, Motec and others?? What I need from an EFI sytem is: Adaptible to my stock 4 cyl. now and adaptible to my turbo 4 cyl. later. What I would like: 1. Easily adjutable 2. Hopefully more power 3. control of a spark 4. Under $1500.00 for the DME and the system(I know a plenum setup is more but just for the electronics I went to spend under $1500.00) 5. It would really nice if I could adjust efery 250 RPMS and in "Realtime"..but if someone can convince me this is to advanced for my needs please let me know!! What I know: 1. Really the EFI systems are pretty simple-The computer just uses simple formulas made up from a series of variables to create "answers"-i..e. Variables-Throttle position, MAP Sensor, Air temp Sensor... Answers-How much fuel to deliver and when to deliver spark.. 2. They are expensive systems!! 3. Most people just go with CARBS!! Why I want an EFI System- 1. Runs fine no matter the temp. or altitude 2. Better Gas mileage-Yes I am not out for a full blown racer yet! 3. Adaptible for turbocharging or displacement increases Thanks for any input and sorry for rambling!-I have searched the archives and I mostly find threads about turbos but I have yet to find a good thread comparing SDS to Haltech and others. I Have seen SDS systems in the $800s and Haltech go for $1000.00, Motec $2400.00, autronic $1350 with autotune $225-Totalt $1600 and Something called Acell DFI for $799.00 so what is the best system for my needs? I do not want to run NOS and I care not for Staging or what ever for drag racing! I just want a system that I can tune and troubleshoot and adpat to my ever changing needs! Thanks, Ron PS I f anyone has done an EFI conversion and would like to share their thoughts and troubles please feel free to E-mail at RonD922@cs.com or through Pelican...

Also how do the EFI systems matup:
Haltech/Acell DFI/SDS/Autronic?? Thansk, Ron PS I have seen a webpage that shows a comparison of options but I do notunderstand why I need 32 Fuel maps over 20 Maps and so on so if anyone could give me alittle insight into which is better for different applications... I know you guys do your homeowrk before paying 1k bucks for an EFI system so if you could share I would really apprecaite it! Thansk, Again, Ron

Ron,
Here is a link to the EFI thread here in the 911 forum. Although this thread is 911 based the info can still be applied to your 914. Mike Mueller of 914 fame has the same system installed (and for sale I might add) on his 914-4. HTH

I have wanted to go to EFI and dump CIS for a while. I don't have the cash right now.
I think it's a great idea to go EFI. I would use SDS or a sys the Mark at Devek sells. http://www.devek.net/ Mark is a good guy even though he does 928s. ;-) Go for it and report back.
