Oil of a certain vintage
I recently came into a windfall of VR1. I met a gentleman by chance in a parking lot sometime last year, he asked about the car and shared his Porsche story with me. Several months ago he walked by when I was working on the Porsche and introduced himself again. Turns out we're neighborhood neighbors. We talked and he mentioned that he had several cases of oil, what type did I use. Just so happened it was VR1, the same I use. He offered to bring it by. Long story long, his very generous gift of 6 cases of oil is sitting in my garage. Did I hit the big time, or did I become the custodian of his hazmat cleanup? I see no datecode, but it's obviously got some age on it. I'm speculating it's possibly from 2001. Seems maybe like it's out of date, but it seems a shame to waste it without asking the braintrust. Thoughts?

Supposidly itll outlast the bottle it came in. But I would certainly see how it looks before going all in. If it looks normal it probrobly is. Iv read the additives can sink to the bottom. I dont know if shaking it up will fix it of if there is something else going on.

Doesn't it start off being like a billion years old?

I wrote to Castrol once asking about shelf life of motor oil in the plastic containers. It was stated that in ideal conditions "about five years". I'm sure it is probably okay for a little longer than that...
The numbers on the bottom of the container should tell you something if you got in touch with Valvoline.

the only people that approach me in parking lots want either money, or to sell me speakers.

Best practice in industry is to not use oils older that 3 years.
That is what we do in our chemical plants, where reliability is very important. Remember: oil is cheaper than engines André |
