You all should check out WWW.NADA.COM to see the value of the vehicles you are looking at. Sometimes, as in the case of rental type units (Ford Taurus, Chevy Cavalier, etc.) , the market is soft and NADA's value is a little high. Not the case with Porsches however. It's easy to use, it's pretty accurate and best of all it's FREE. I would avoid Kelly Blue Book (www.kbb.com) as their values are inaccurate and are mainly for car dealerships and some subprime lenders.
Don't forget to do a CarFax check on anything that you are interested in. It doesn't guarantee that the car you are looking at will have no problems but it will give you general information to compare to what the current owner says. How many owners, title issues, etc. I recently purchased a 1990 C-2 off the Internet. I originally saw it on eBay. It failed to reach the reserve set for it 3 times. It started out at 32k the 30k then 29k. I called the dealership directly (it was a consignment unit, they were selling it for the owner who just purchased a 97 twin turbo). After talking with the salesman, looking at approx. 15 different pictures from different angles and asking for some of the important service records to be faxed to me, I pulled a CarFax. It checked out as was stated... So I offered 27k. The buyer accepted. I then paid 1k for it to be shipped cross-country by covered carrier. It literally looks like it was just driven off the showroom floor. I used to have a 1977 911S targa. This new one blows the doors off the old one as it has been heavily modified... It's just barely streetable. If I had it to do over again I think I would have gone for one that was closer to original and done the mods I wanted. (But I'll take the 20k in upgrades the prior owner put on it!) Good luck in your search and purchase! Rick

The one I am looking at is a 90C2 Cab, 90k, 5sp, leather, Orig 17" alloys, Black/Tan with all records....
Other than a little wear on the drivers seat it looks to be very well taken care of. Local car, asking price is $21,800... Opinions?

That seems very low. When I was looking at '90 cabs the going rate was around 30k for one in excellent condition. 21k seems too good to be true but maybe the market has softened.

$19k... somebody may have found a great deal. That would leave at least $10k for rebuilds and upgrades to make a perfect car.

Price too low
I agree with JonT. The price of that car should be in the 30K range. PLEASE be sure and get a PPI from a reputable shop. 21K is just too low for a straight '90 C2 Cab in good condition.

I have seen tons of `90-`91 C2's in the $20k range. I think they represent one of the most depreciated model year 911's out there. It is probably due to the fact that there were some potentially nasty problems with the early 964 platform (dual mass flywheel, leaking cylinder heads, failing distributor belts, etc.). The number of cars effected was relatively low, but unfortunately, bad news travels fast. Kind of like the whole "premature valve guide wear" issue on the 3.2L Carreras.

I agree with the "fear-factor" on the 964's, but what about the premature valve guide wear on late model carrera's? The '87-'89 are the most affected, and also the least depreciating model of a standard road going 911? I guess we're special.
