Guys,
Seems everytime I take my RUF to the track I end needing new tires. Damn, those things are expensive! So, last time out at the Nuerburgring I mounted my camera and shot some film, hoping you could help figure out what's eating my tires. http://www.cowlishaw.net/~jim/video/RUF_Nuerburgring.wmv Thanks for your help - ![]()

That has got to be the best personal video I've ever seen. I don't think there is anything wrong with the tires or the suspension. You just have the tires at their limit. Those four wheel drifts are murder on tires. I assume that was one lap of the Nurbergring?
Great driving on your part also. Now that is how a Porsche is meant to be driven! |

Maybe if you mount the tires sideways they will last longer.
I have wood. That was so much fun to watch. Thanks.

Here is my opinion of what I saw in the video: first, I can't imagine what could be causing the excessive tire wear, maybe you just need an alignment. Second it looked to me as if there was excessive speed and the friction coefficient of the tires, brakes, and clutch were being excercised to or slightly beyond their design capabilities. Overall, you appeared to be having way too much fun!

rs,
I liked your car better when it was green, and slightly less smokey. BTW, are you joining us for the next NOVA run on 17 Nov ? Looking forward to seeing you car in the flesh - it looks gorgeous in the pics.

rs, I think your tires would last longer if you didn't put them on a plane to Europe for use on another car

I found this copy at http://www.cowlishaw.net/~jim/video/video.htm while looking for 'Getaway in Stockholm' (another classic). Lots of other flicks also.
Tony, yes, I'll be there on the 17th. Looking forward to meeting other NoVa Pelicans. Greg

Ok, First off, excellent video!!! in regard to your driving, I have a few critiques. First, I think you are coming into the turns too hot. The reason I say this is that you are doing alot of opposite lock and correcting. This is causing you to scrub off speed by using the tires, thus the excessive tire wear. Remember slow in= fast out!!! Do you feel comfortable trail braking? This might help too. Second, foot to the floor at the apex!! This will relate directly to what I said before. The better the car is set up before the apex the more power you will be able to put down after. Seeing as you have a turbo, left foot braking would be another skill worth developing. This will allow you to keep the revs up while slowing down so you still have the turbo spooled up. Lastly, all this is working towards beeing SMOOOOOTH, remember you want to dance with the car, it's your partner and all inputs must be deleberate yet sesitive to your partners rythym. I hope this helps and best of luck.
Cheers, James

The driver was "Sideways" Stephan of Ruf video fame. quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After four runs the photographer is sure she has all the evidence and we decide to do likewise at Aremberg. Before we mount up again Trevor casually dropped in some advice: "I've told you before Chris, when you're sideways you're loosing time". I look to Stephan who was perhaps a Scandinavian rallyist in a former life and he smiles ruefully, as if to say 'yes, but when you are making love you're not always trying to make babies. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

You got me!
RS, I knew you were joking about the tires but thought you were serious about being the driver....Until I looked at your location.
That'll teach me from going straight to the video. |
