strange wires found on SC
 

I was poking around the engine of my '80 SC yesterday and I found a couple unconnected wires hiding behind the distributor that I have never seen before. I'm concerned about them because the ends are corroded and totally fried like whatever they used to connect to was toasted somehow. There is a brown wire (ground) and the other is red with white stripes. They seem to come straight out of the back of the fan shroud. Does anybody know what they're supposed to go to? Thanks.

Sorry Leland, but I don't have a digital camera. I was hoping somebody would know based on the color of the wires. Unfortunately, I cannot tell how long the wires were before they were cut or if their location on the engine has anything to do with what they attach to. The warm-up regulator is nearby, but it seems to be wired correctly.

Is your '80 a euro car? If so, then brown and red/white in that location sounds like the connection for the thermovalve. If you have a US model, then 1980 wouldn't have a thermovalve.

Here is a shot of my thermovalve wires. I know it's a poor shot, but my camera doesn't do close-ups very well. The wires shown are brown and red/white.

The wiring diagram for my 82 SC shows a brown and red wire running from the WUR to the "supplementary air valve". I do not have one, and I think it is part of the CA emmissions equipment, which would also explain where yours went.

this weekend is the swap meet at Zims. I bet if you were to gather with the Dallas pelicans, you could compare...i have a 78 Euro if you want to look. The previous owner beat the hell out of the poor car and im doing my best to get it all back together :)

Thanks for the replies guys. I found the wiring diagrams posted here on Pelican and it looks like the wires on the '82 go to this mysterious "Supplementary Air Valve" as Olivier pointed out. My car is not a Euro or CA model so I'm assuming it was not equipped with the supplementary air valve. So does this mean that it is normal for SC's to have wires for the supplementary air valve that just sit there unconnected?

I too have the same wires and connector stashed behind the engine without a connection. My car is a '79SC and is not a CA or Euro chasis.

Then you are missing your thermovalve, or it's not plugged in. The thermovalve is part of the K-basic CIS system and is on all euro SC's and '78-'79 USA models.

Where is the thermovalve? Perhaps I just need to plug it in.

That "Supplementary Air Valve" is commonly referred to as the "Auxilary Air Regulator" or the AAR. All SC's regardless of destination had them. It is located on the passenger side of the engine bay and bolted to the #5 and #6 intake runners. I have a picture of it at home I can post. You could easily check if that device has it's wires connected.

Check if those two mystery wires have 12 volts running through them with the engine running or the fuel pump jumpered. The wires for the WUR, AAR, and thermovalve all have 12 volts once the fuel pump is running.

Another possibility is cruise control. Do you have it?

The thermovalve should be located on the driver side of the engine bay back behind the WUR. The vacuum line coming from the lower port on the WUR goes to the thermovalve. I have a picture of it I can post.

Thanks Rob! I am familiar with the Aux. Air Regulator, and I will double check to see if it is wired up correctly, although I'm pretty sure it is. My car does have cruise control which has not worked since I've owned it so I'll check that also. I really want to find out where the wires go because their melted, corroded ends concern me. Right now the car is in the shop getting it's oil leaks fixed. Hopefully it will be ready for the Zims swap meet this weekend :)
