I just sent off an email to Michael Kendall, a marketing manager for SPEED Channel, complaining about the lack of Goodwood coverage this year. To give him credit, he replied within 20 minutes:
David The Goodwood festival may be a big hit in Europe but has difficulty attracting an audience in the USA and with the rights fee that was demanded, the festival did not make sense for us. I understand there are tapes available. How about a revolving library?

Plus they just couldn't squeeze it in between NASCAR Today, NASCAR Yesterday, This Week In NASCAR, Last Week in NASCAR, NASCAR Tech, NASCAR Garage, Inside NASCAR, Outside NASCAR, NASCAR Wednesday, Bunch of Farmers Going Around in Circles Slowly, etc., etc.
The most interesting bit of information from this post for me was to find that Speed Channel still exists. I haven't watched it in over a year. Phooey! |

This is actually a forum letter: Dear insert name of non-NASCAR viewer The insert name of non-NASCAR race may be a big hit in Europe but has difficulty attracting an audience in the USA and with the rights fee that was demanded, the insert name of non-NASCAR race did not make sense for us (particularly after we spent $5 million on the rights fee to NASCAR racing). |

Cegerer...
I think you hit the nail on the head. Since I work for an un-named American car manufacturer, I have received several tickets to NASCAR races. I attended a few, but after sitting in traffic for three hours, being bombarded by discarded chicken bones and beer cans, roasting in the sun, sitting shoulder to shoulder with Bubba and Bubba neither of whom who have discovered soap, and then sitting in traffic for three hours, I don't even accept them when they're free any more. The real shame is, the only racing available on tv anymore involves NASCAR or WRC (if you like Subarus, Peugots and Ford zingy thingy's). Rob |

Porshin: Also very funny about the bubba-part. Yes, it is a shame to have to watch European rallying or V8 trucks (they are, aren't they) driving around in circles...remember Group C? And CART? Nigel Mansell? F1 with those McLaren-BMWs?

In my opinion, Goodwood is in the top eschelon of car shows, you get to rub shoulders with the actual drivers of the many historic cars on display. Whats even better is that the cars are actually raced up the hill, in many cases by the very drivers that originally drove them.
Anybody who loves cars of any kind, this show would appeal to them.

Rob - I am assuming you didn't drive the 911 to the Nascar races you attended because lord only knows what would happen to the car there
David - thanks for the info. This only reaffirms how I feel about Speed TV. Guess I'll just have to go back to Goodwood and show my support in person!

Racing trucks in a muddy field...now that works! I don't get it when done on a racetrack though.

What Speed Channel are you guys watching?
I agree there's WAY too much NASCAR for my taste or anyone else's here, but it does pay the bills. Did they fail to cover any F1 race? How 'bout ALMS? CART? And yes, WRC. Why don't you guys tell me where you're going to watch the SCCA Run Offs, Atlantics and the other CART development classes. Yes Speed is not what we'd all like to be, but even though I don't watch any NASCAR, it’s the most watched channel at my house. Flame on boys

there was an article in the akron beacon journal recently about nascar fans.... i'll have to see if i still have the paper at work but one sentence summed it all up from the writer of the article............ " i was surrounded by beer bellies and one guy in particular had an empty 12-pack beer carton on his head with the words 'free mamograms' written on it........." not an exact quote but damn close from what i remember. they need a SPEED II channel like espn2 for the real racing

Guys:
I think the previous thread about too much NASCAR is absolutely true. I mean...even IF you're a NASCAR fan..c'mon...look at the programming schedule. Typical day...hard day at office...come home and plop down in front of the tube... and miss the WRC at 5:30 to 6:30 pm because I come in at 6:15 or so. Lessee..what's up on the schedule? ....NASCAR, then NASCAR legends, then wrenches of NASCAR, then NASCAR history, then Legends of NASCAR, then NASCAR past champions..... Ge the idea? It's 12:00 midnight now, and there is NO END of CONTINUOUS NASCAR coverage ona typical workday evening. Like a hungry man who eyes his first hamburger, the second one doesn't taste "quite" as good..and by the time the fifth one is served up...you want to barf ! Fine...NASCAR pays the bills. But how about SPREADING IT OUT a bit? Goodwood is an example of what EVERYONE likes, if you're into cars, bikes, whatever of any stripe. What an inane comment from the Speed folks !! ---Wil Ferch
