Question hard targa top

I keep reading about people "folding" their targa top and putting it in the back seat. The top on my targa is hard and there is no way it will fit in the back seat.Is this normal or is it a aftermarket top.It has instructions in the trunk on how to store the top and they look like they have been there since day one. Thanks in advance

The top should be able to fold up for your car, what is it made of? Is it solid or is it a leathery material? If it is solid it is an aftermarket (unless Porsche made a solid top?)

But if it is the material top, the front and rear bars fold inwards, this will collapse the top, but I am sure you would have figured that out.

you have one of the rare factory hardtops most likely. i believe 75 was the first one. it was only used a couple of years.

Yeah, like my '75, Grant, you have a rare and desirable factory hardtop. I often read that the '75 Targas all had factory hardtop as standard - only the AC models having the soft targa top as they could not fit them in the trunk due to the AC gear being there.
They sell for quite a bit used. I'd keep it though. Also, there was only 266 Targas made in '75 - I believe.

Yes Grant ,you have a rare, factory option ,hard top.I have one on my car and had to pay a lot of $ to get it. I have been told that about 800 were sold in north america, but a lot more in northern europe. If you want to trade ,I have a very nice folding top . can we deal? Just joking , you have the greatest option ever for a Targa .

PER THE FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL ... the hard roof panel was standard for the '74 model, apparently a cost-saving measure. The folding roof was optional, and apparently most Targas were ordered that way by dealers!

Warren, thanks for clearing that up ,I had some misinformation regarding the option- no option status of the hard top.In any event it is a great part to tighten up a targa. I think i'm going to paint mine red{same as car } just to see what it looks like , i can always recover it in vinyl if i don't like it .

Guys does anyone have a clear 'saratoga' hard top for a targa? If so how do you like it ?
I'm thinking of getting one for the winter as I don't like the feel of the car with the top on - it's all closed in, so a clear top would be the solution !

I painted my targa roll bar and I'm very happy with the results. Here is a picture of what it looks like...

I did it after seeing that gorgeous green car on these bulletin boards.

Cool

I have a '75 Targa also with the factory hard top. It's probably the best little known targa feature I have found. I have often wondered how many were out there in the USA. I do remember that there were a lot of them delivered in Europe.

If your car has the socket in the middle of the front interior portion of the roll bar, you can use a foldable top also. I have one in mine and can use either top, if the occasion calls for one.

Good luck with your car.
