1971 911T rear window defroster switch removal from dash
Hello,
I am working on a 1971 911T and I am looking for information on how to remove the rear window defroster heater knob from the dashboard? My intent is to completely remove the switch once I can get the pull knob off of the switch. Thanks |

You should be able to undo the chrome bezel, and the switch will be loose and moves into the trunk.
If it's stuck, you may need someone to hold it from the trunk side as you undo the bezel. The air plenum and associated ducts may need to be moved, depending on your access.

Or you can get access to the back side of the switch through the speaker hole, if you have a removable speaker cover. On my 73 the speaker cover is gently pried up and pops out (and is currently out, if you need photos). Not sure about a 71. Otherwise you have to remove some ductwork, as Classic says. Not really that bad to remove the center ducts. No need to even detach the cables, though you may want to replace some of the old, brittle tubing.

Thanks for the replies.
My challenge is not removing the chrome bezel. I am looking for info on (forgive me) getting my knob off. I have glass out and dash out so I have very good access. I just don't want to do any damage as i get the switch knob off of the switch from the interior side. It does not spin off. I have not noticed any small screws or pin holding the knob on. I have a also tried to release the push/pull shaft by pushing on the shaft from the back side of the switch, but without success. I had an old ford and the light switch had a button on the back side that needed to be depressed in order to remove the shaft. Again thanks for the info. |

Thanks Glen
I want to thank Glen @ PPs. You were right. The knob does unscrew. I was concerned about twisting the knob too much. I held the shaft with some needle nose pliers and then I could turn the knob without twisting the shaft. It has been on there for long time so it was fairly tight.
Again thanks |
