Don't know if Pelican has these or not, but Performance Products carries a unit that fits inside the distributor and replaces existing points (supposedly ending the expense and hassle of changing them). It claims improved gas mileage and smooth, quick starts. Any opinions, board? Price is $90 and mainly for '73 and '74 CIS cars it would appear or Bosch 009 or 050 distributors.

Hi Ryan,
Do a search under Pertronix on the pelican site and you will be inundated with useful information. If you need to, please contact me directly at marcw@pipeline.com and I will go over anything you want. The Pertronix stuff has been beaten to death, but I have to say one thing... buy it from Pelican. You want a support system around you that really understands Porsches technically (not just through a catalog) and can help you if the product is DOA (of which I had two). Pertronix guys were nice, but they didn't understand the Porsche system well enough to make it work, but they were smart enough to be dangerous. Email me or, if nothing else, search for Pertronix on this site. All The Best, Marc |

Pertronix seems to be a hit or miss proposition.
I installed an Alison optical ignition in my car in '83 or '84 it was still working well when I sold my ignition system last year Crane bought Alison ignition......... its still the way to go compared to pertronix based on my experience.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm not experiencing problems with my points at the present time, but had happened across the product and just wanted to fish for opinions. Last year during xmas traffic rush, my points closed and I had the pleasant task of pushing the p-car off the street to an adjacent parking lot...ho ho ho, eh?!
Anyway, my wrench didn't have my points in stock so I just cleaned them and they're still good to go. I've been told to always use a dollar bill to clean them with...actually I was told to make it a $100 bill... Thanks again for the tips and the offer. Ryan

Ryan,
Like Tim, I bought two Alisons (now Crane), one for my '75 530I and the other for '67 250 SE coupe. By Beemer had it for at least 120,000 miles until I donated 2 years ago. The only problem I had was the wire coming out from the optical thru distributor housing due to movements at advance. Sent it back to Crane and got a brand new one free. The one on the Mercedes is is running strong. Final word is 'don't have to change points anymore'. |

Scarebus,
Thanks for the testimonial. I wasn't aware of the Crane product...I'll have to check it out. Sounds like people are saying to be a little wary of Pertronix... Ryan

I'm thinking about this as well. Has anyone experienced increases in gas milage or an improvement in fuel burn (e.g. an exhaust tip which is less black)?
