Moch-1 Rear shelf speaker pod
I have just got hold of a second hand rear shelf speaker pod which I believe is a Moch-1 manufactured part. it looks like this:
![]() It came out of a 1983 911SC targa so I expected it to be an easy fit. I am not sure how it is supposed to be fitted but it looks like it should just sit on the existing shelf with the front sitting behind the top lip of the rear seat back panel. My shelf has no speakers in as it is an early SC. It looks like this: ![]() The thing is that the top of the unit touches the glass all the way up the back, and the fit around the bottom of the window is poor. Does anyone know how this should be installed, or have instructions? Last edited by keynsham1; 01-29-2015 at 12:38 PM.. |

You'll need to remove the luggage strap holders on the rear deck.
I used some double sided adhesive backed velcro to adhere it to the deck. Tony

Never seen a rear shelf quite like that. It doesn't seem like the two were made to be together.
Ask yourself if you want it, though. I'm of the mind that rear speakers only degrade the sound stage. If you're looking for more volume, get an amp with crossovers and maybe some better speakers. If you're looking for some bass, go for a sub. Maybe one of those powered underseat suckers. You'll come out with better sound and probably more money if you sold that shelf. |

I see you have a Targa - is that Moch designed for a Targa or a coupe? They probably have differently shaped rear parcel shapes. When I had my old 75 Targa, I made a flat plywood panel that laid on top of the rear parcel shelf and then fit two speakers onto it facing upwards. The rear glass seemed to reflect the sound fairly well. I used the luggage strap locations to attach the panel so it wouldn't move around.

I have solved the problem by splitting the existing shelf so the only part remaining is the back board and top edge. The flat shelf and trim around the window are replaced with the speaker box. It now fits perfectly. The shelf is only held together with staples so I can reverse the procedure if I want to.
I want the bax in my car as I like the look and it is a very rare item in the UK. If the speakers sound poor I will just adjust the fader forwards, or disconnect them! |

This (in conjunction with a couple of self-tappers through the parcel shelf that wedge the front edge) worked fine for years - right up until I went on the skid pan while waiting for the track to dry out and G forces ripped the Moch-1 free. Gave me a bit of a scare as I unstuck the rear and got it power-sliding - and bits of the interior started bouncing around behind me ![]()
