half-shaft questions
Hello all, today I had all of the bolts back out on one of my axles. My fault as I forgot to go retorque them. I was going slow so no damage and only one of the allen heads broke. Question is, what type of washers do these things use, I have half spring washers and half lock washers. Are these stretch bolts that need to be replaced ?
Thanks as always

Year and model? The half-shaft CV joints which use lock washers utilize the Schnoor type which is a "toothed Belleville" (dished shape) lock washer. The lock washers should be replaced everytime the screws are loosened or removed. The screws may be reused; they are not "stretch" bolts. Do not lubricate the screw threads. Do you know the proper torque for your CV joint screws? Are there four or six screws per CV joint? Cheers, Jim

it is a six bolt off of a 76. I am aware of the schor washers, I guess mine all got lost. I will try to track some down somewhere. My buddy said it is a good idea to clean all threads with berrymans carb cleaner including the axle shaft threads. Dry them off good and use blue locktite if you wish.

Actually I'm pretty sure some year(s) had stretch bolts?!? Not sure which though.

In 1984 and later the CV joint screws ( the screw part no. changed) no longer came with locking washers. This may mean they are stretch bolts but I suspect instead it means they came with a some type of prevailing torque locking feature such a distorted thread profile. But 1983 and earlier the CV joint screws can be reused if in good condition. Cheers, Jim

FWIW I also had the half shaft come loose from the trans on my 87... on the highway! I was lucky as there was no damage, but when I put the new half shaft in I used new bolts with the schnoor washers. Can't be too careful!

Did my 30k inspection several years ago with a ex-Porsche mechanic. We did the half shafts and re-assembled them using the old bolts and not a problem after 25k of driving. Either the 85 model bolts are not the "use once" type of bolt or I am very lucky!

Where did you get the washers? I tried to get lock washers from PP and received the split type.

Search : Schnoor with Early S Man and you'll find it.
Good Luck
