Question Fuel tank exterior coating and Porsche's rubberized undercoating...whatizzit?

Hi-

After pulling my fuel tank out for reasons I won't bore you with, I was finding some rust under the thick gray/white plasticized type wrinkle coating that had seperated from the tank surface around the flange area. Porsche uses whatever this coating is on both the tank and various parts of the car for undercoating and protection, etc. Looks like dried gummy caulk when you dig your finger into it. After some cleanup to the tank, I am looking for a match material to spray back on the areas I have worked on.

I have tried to match with 3M's 08883 paintable undercoating, but it doesn't yield the right finish, thickness, and it is tar based. Anybody have a lead on what the Porsche plastic type coating is??

Some friends recommended the Eastwood company for finding a product but no such luck.

Your help or ideas are appreciated as always...

-BG

Porsche used a European Valvoline product called Tectyl ... I don't know if it is available in North America. A Google.com advanced search on 'valvoline tectyl' will turn up plenty of info from European Valvoline websites ...

I have heard the Wurth Stone Guard or Body Shutz (sp) is a very good match. I haven't tried it.

Wurth Stone Guard is what you need...it will do an excellent job for you. It is available in black, grey and beige. Wurth also makes a gun to apply it so that it has that characteristic surface texture, but if you are doing small areas you can brush it on and dab it to get a similar texture. It will readily accept paint if you need.
