Clutch wear: In-car wear measurement possible?
Is there any way to roughly determine how much life is left on a 915 clutch disk while it is still in the car, such as via an inspection hole in the transmission or by remaining clutch cable adjustment? Or do I just wait for the day and hope I'm not stuck in an inconvenient place. Is it a "soft" failure such that I get some warning and can limp home if I don't use too much torque?

it will start to slip when you are in a gear like 3rd 4th ot 5th at low RPM and floor it. then it will get worse. you will be able to drive it for quite a while if you are easy on it. once it gets really bad it can damage the flywheel.

When I bought my 86 I never felt the clutch slipping. However upon separating the engine from the transmission I found that the clutch disc was worn out to the rivets and had started scratching the flywheel. I was fortunate enough to be able to have the flywheel resurfaced.
So if you have any doubts about your clutch I would suggest dropping the engine and assess the situation. New flywheels are expensive...!
