Get 101 Projects, written by our gracious host. Also, I just bought the Bentley manual - it seems as though that covers everything that I'll ever conceivably do on the car. I'm not sure if there's a Bentley manual for 930s, but if there is, it's well worth the money.

It looks like Pelican sells the Porsche Turbo factory manuals for $110. I'm sure that would be all you need, and that's about as expensive as the Bentley manual (which, now that I think of it further, is not available for 930s). I've never had any personal experience with the factory manuals, but other people seem to like them.

I don't believe they have a Bentley manual for the 930.

IMHO, there's no substitute for the factory manuals - at least if you are doing major work. Almost any of the books will get you through changing brake pads, shocks, etc.

The outrageous cost doesn't seem as bad if you can amortize it over several cars or if you plan to own your car (or at least a 911/930) forever.

Plus the factory books are fun to read or just flip through if, like me, you're into that sort of thing.

Brian,

Agree that the factory manuals are nice to have and I have a set of the early manuals. One thing that the "aftermarket" manuals do is show you ways around using the factory tools.

One of my pet peeves of the factory manuals is that they are always telling you to use "special tool #xxx" to perform a job. Unless you work at a dealership and have access to all the tools you are sunk. Bentley and the others will usually give you some ideas on tools that are available locally that will do the same job for a lot less money.

The Bentley manual is a very good tool and along with Waynes book is a must for any 911 owner... buy the factory manuals used when you find a good deal.

Joe

Any manual published by Robert Bentley Publishing is worth its price. They are very good. 10 Projects is a most excellent book, and I expect Wayne's upcoming engine rebuild book will be an extreme bargain also.

Not great

Bentley manual is not only going to be missing a lot for the 930; my 911SC version is missing a lot for the 911SC. . . .actual pages missing!

I just sent off an email to Bentley asking for a remedy for the missing pages.

Also, there are quite a few threads¹ here pointing out mistakes in the Bentley manuals. Their website has addressed only one that I know of here.

1)errors another . . .search for more.

Thumbs up update

Bentley Publishers responed quickly to my email concerning the missing pages. They are nicely offering a remedy for the missing pages.
Anyone else missing pages? Seems I remember reading a post about this a year, or so ago.

The order of the manuals I purchased are:
1) Haynes - overall view of car
2) Bruce Andersons Handbook - good for performance and mod overview
3) 101 Projects for actual hands on projects for the 911Porsche Owner
4) Factory Manuals - looks good but I haven't had enough time to proint them out.
5) PET - all Porsche numbers as soon as i figure it out I'll be set for referencing parts

On my list is Waynes Engine rebuild book.
I don't have the Bently manual.

Every manuel has something to offer. This board fills in the grey areas. I think all the above can be provided by our host with the exception of the Factory manuals which I heard are on indefinite back order and the PET CD that is not available to the public, so I hear.

s_wilwerding - you just pulled a John Walker. It's *NOT* polite to recommend competitors on this website.

I didn't know recommending a competitor was "pulling a John Walker". Considering all that JW has done for this site in bringing solutions people can trust, I would call "pulling a John Walker" as recommending the BEST solution. . . .I can't even think of a time when he has recommended a competitor to Pelican. . .though I'll bet it must really sting if he does.

Many apologies - the reason I posted that link was so Jocke could "see" the manual. It wasn't meant as an endorsement of that company over you and frankly, I didn't even make that connection until I read your post.

I guess the reason I posted the link was because I didn't see Jocke buying the 911SC manual since he has a 930.

Again, a thousand apologies. I will try to watch myself in the future.

yeah, and some posters here, with strange performance ideas, get the canned response #1 "it's your car, do what you like."
Yes, obviously true. Though that doesn't stop others from pointing out the shortfalls of some guy putting a V8 in his 911.

Sometimes your best friends are your critics.
Furthermore, one certainly does not win friends by telling them they need to sacrifice their own integrity to prop up anothers.

i probably did post about other shops a few times as a new member, until i learned the ettiquette. yesterday's slip-up was because i didn't realize pelican sold the 914-6 conversion stuff. how wide and varied an invertory they have. to be safe, we need to only refer posters to pelican, and then pelican can refer them somewhere else if they don't deal with that item.

Thanks Guy´s for the great input!

It feels like I have to buy a couple of these to be satisfied, and I think I go for 101 projects and Haynes books.
