Speedometer Angle Drive question

The speedometer in my 1970 911T stopped working the very first day I drove it last spring. Assuming the cable was broken, I purchased a new one and attempted to replace it a few weeks later. Realizing the amount of work required to do this, I put it off until the winter because I just wanted to drive it.

This weekend, I managed to get the old one out and the new one installed after a lot of frustration. When I attempted to connect the cable onto the transmission, I noticed that there was no pin protruding from the speedometer angle drive! What does this mean? After all this work, do I need a new speedometer angle drive, which is a real pain to install? I'm attaching to a photo I found on this forum of what mine looks like, minus the pin.

Advice would be very much appreciated!
