OPERATION: "LET'S ROLL!"

Honorable Representative,

The President of the United States spoke for America when he addressed Congress on Thursday night, but the most truly American words which have been spoken were not his. Rather, they were the words of Todd Beamer when he gave the signal to the passengers to rise up and attack the terrorists who had seized control of Flight 93, eventually causing that flight to crash in a field in Pennsylvania rather than the assumed target: The White House.

The words "let's roll" should be the battle cry of this war on terrorism, and I believe that the war should be conducted under the name "Operation Let's Roll." Those words should signal the start of every military action we conduct in this war.

This is a war which is, as a terrible but inescapable fact, a civilian war as much as a military one. The first casualties were civilian, and the first acts in response were civilian. It is fitting that the first heroic words of resistance were also civilian. It is also fitting that we acknowledge this in the naming our national response.

Therefore, I ask that you join with the other members of Congress and request the President to officially rename Operation Ultimate Justice, to recognize that the passengers on Flight 93 showed the true spirit of American freedom.

A great idea, I agree, though I believe the operation's name is officially 'Infinite Justice' ...

It is too bad a dozen or so souls in each of the other three planes didn't take the initiative when the descent began to an obviously incorrect destination!

The Pentagon is looking for a new name. Something about "infinite justice" being the role of God (Allah), not man.

If the passengers on the other planes would have known what was going on, there WOULD have been a different outcome.

Two quotes have come out of this destruction that have stuck in my head. "Let's roll" is one. The other one was spoken by an officer in the NYFD. He was asked why his men didn't evacuate the WTC when they knew it was going to collapse. He said "fire fighters run into buildings, they don't run out of them".

I agree, as evidenced by the fourth plane.

Prior to 9/11/01, no one would have imagined that a hijacked plane was going to get intentionally crashed, even if it began a descent. Hijacked planes almost always land somewhere other than their planned destination! At the time, with the knowledge they had, those passengers did the right thing. Can you imagine if a passenger attacked a hijacker, got 15 other passengers killed in the melee, and the plane then landed at JFK? Oops.

They were just following US airline procedures: Cooperate with the hijackers.

Of course, the game has changed now . . .

I don't think anyone will ever hear the phrase "lets roll" again and not think of those guys on that flight. It would be hard to calculate the damage to the American
psyche if our Capital or the White House had been hit. The damage done was bad enough. I keep thinking of JFK's book "Profiles in Courage" when the story of that flight is told. True courage in the face of total chaos. We owe them more that we know.

I don't buy that logic.

The highjackers were armed with knives.
This can only mean one thing - they do not plan to survive. You cannot possibly land anywhere and expect to hold a plane with a box cutter.

How many people phoned home to say goodby? They knew they were going to die - and did nothing.

It would be a cold day in hell before I would just sit there and wait to die.

Too bad no one on those flights were as clever or as tough as you.
