Thumbs up Help Us Hot Rod A 1966 912!

In the coming months I'll be working with a buddy to hot rod a beautiful 1966 912.

Our client wants to keep her appearance as original as possible - so no flares or major bodywork with this build. Think of it more as a "sleeper" than a hot rod. We will be tackling the following:

Engine
Transmission
Brakes
Suspension
Wheels / Tires
Interior

Everything in the list above will be sourced. So if you have something that you think would be perfect for this 912, please let me know!

Any input, suggestions, warnings, etc. would be much appreciated. I'll get some photos of the car posted in a few days.

Thanks!
Craig

In guessing keeping a flat four is out of the question. A Benton built twin plug would go nicely in a beautiful 912. Sad to see one less 912 out there, especially a beautiful one.

Usually the first thought is horsepower, but!!! Performance is really about power/weight. I spent 2-3 years removing weight from my 72 911T. Seats, door panels, fiberglass hood and ducktail, 2 batteries to 1 gel battery, M&K muffler (30lbs stock, M&K 10 lbs), aluminum trailing arms. All together I removed about 150 lbs. That was a lot cheaper than just adding horse power. Later when the horsepower was added I needed less and ended up with 9:1 power/weight. Of course it's a endless road but that was the start.

Interested to hear your plans. That's a pretty hefty budget. I have a 66 912 that i'm working on too, though my budget is about 1/10th of yours!

Put in a high power 4 cylinder polo motor. Quite spendy but preserves the 912 spirit with the performance of a 911.http://www.polomotor.com

Jake Raby Type IV motor. Cheaper than a Polo motor but still pricey.

IMHO the type 4 would look out of place in the early 912's. The entry level pricing on Jakes engines are now 20K. I have on of Jakes engines in my 914 and I'm a huge fan but the early 912 deserve one of Bentons twin plug. If done right can get your 150 HP. I'm sure that Benton's engines are not cheap either though.

And for brakes I highly recommend the 3.0 inch aluminum brembo calipers.

Yeah the flat 4 is out. We plan on going to 6 cylinders.

Thanks for mentioning Benton. Had not heard of them before. Spent some time looking through their website. Very very cool.

This is the only photo available to me right now. I'll post some more when I see her again.

Regarding the engine build, we were thinking somewhere between a 3.0 - 3.3 with carbs. I'm guessing that going any larger would be risky with all that weight hanging out back.

Here we go! Received the car yesterday and drove her around a bit today. She's in great shape!
