fuel accumulator
Will be removing this for my 3.6 transplant, help me understand how it works. There are three lines connected to it, assume one is a feed from the tank, one obviously went into the filter then the CIS. Is the third a return to the tank? I know there is a return to the tank from the CIS.
Why would the 3.6 not need an accumulator?

The 3.6 used a Motronic system. It is completely different animal in terms of fuel control.
It uses what think is called a "pulsed" system as the fuel is back controlled by a pressure regulator at the end of the loop. The CIS is front controlled by the accumulator and fuel distributor. Granted Motronic probably has some form of accumulator to control the uneven pulses from the fuel pump, but I doubt it is the same. ... This is purely conjecture though. Thom might have a better answer for you.

Thanks Adrian,
I'm not near my car but at work right now so maybe I'm picturing the wrong thing. When I check the Pet CD the accumulators only have two lines coming out the top. One from the tank and one to the filter. I thought for sure that mine had a third line coming from the bottom. The 3.6 obviously controls fuel pressure much differently than the CIS, fuel pump to filter to Motronic. Just trying to make sure I have all of my basis covered when the 3.6 arrives, extra fuel lines with no where to go scare me.

They only have two lines, as far as i know. A line out the bottom would be a drain hose, I think.

LOL - yup, extra lines are bad
![]() Also you can "T" off the line on a closed loop system and not return it to the tank depending on where the fuel pump is placed. ... Granted this is highly open to debate because some claim that returning to the tank is good to cool the fuel while others claim the fuel temperature is not important and to route it right back in to the fuel loop. Again I would wait for more opinions than just my theory based from Charles Probst and Ben Watson. Which is not application specific at all.

Oh yah! The drain hole, that is the third bung on there.
Granted if this is draining fuel the diaphram is toast and the accumulator trash. Some applications drain to the ground and some back to the fuel tank. Not sure what the 911 does.
