Rust prevention

When I bought my car, the cowl looked like this:

After it was repaired, painted, etc., I put in a new gasket. I was replacing the cowl screen today (fresh air vent) and noticed that the tray that the gasket fits into along the back edge of the trunk lid is full of water under the gasket (which is not glued in along the entire length).

I highly suspect that water trapped along the gasket or under it was the source of the original rust problem.

Now I need to figure out what to do to prevent a recurrence of the same damage (short of keeping the car in the garage when it might rain :( )

Any help greatly appreciated.

Yikes, that's a lot of rust!

One thing that a lot of 914'ers do is NOT glue the seal back in. That way, you can dry underneath it if you want, and check it occasionally for rust. Also, with no glue, water would tend to not get trapped as easily and hopefully dry faster - at least that's the hope. Also, no risk of the glue lifting the paint.

But, I would think that if its properly fixed (new metal, properly prepared and painted), and the seal is glued back in, it shouldn't rust again.
