Replacing 911sc shift bushings, shifter doesn't feel right.
 

There was a lot of extra play in the shifter and shifting was very vague in my 1980 911 sc, so after some research here on Pelican parts, I decided replacing the bushings was the way to go. After replacing them and reinstalling the entire shift unit, while the coupler is still disconnected in the back, it does not feel right at all. It's very loose in first -fourth gears, and it doesn't want to go to fifth and reverse. It feels like there's something (a springy feeling) blocking the shifter from moving to the right. Anyone know what I've done wrong? Thanks!

The springy thing is the reverse lockout device. Look at the top of the shifter housing and you will see a tab. This prevents going into reverse when making the 5th to 4th shift.

You have to put a bit of pressure to the right to overcome this tab when selecting 5th gear.

Maybe you don't have proper coupler adjustment. Try the easy things first:

Use a sharpie & mark the spline/coupler orientation to mark your present adjustment as a reference/base setting. Then try readjusting shift coupler by:

1) Loosen the shifter coupling (13mm for clamp).
2) Find the *sweetspot* neutral plane. Hold shifter in neutral all the way towards the drivers side (left if facing front) and at the same time, rotate the shifter coupling all the way towards the passenger side (right if facing front).
3) Tighten the coupler.
4) Enjoy smooth shifting again!
