Red Book being published again?
Looking at Amazon and a few other sites it looks like the newest edition of the Red Book is going to be released this April or May for around $20-25.
|
Thanks!
|
Sorry for the dumb question but what is a red book and why do we care?
|
The Red Book has been said to be the best source for detailed data on Porsche chassis number, engines, and option codes over the years. If you are buying a used 911 Porsche or engine it is a great resource to have on hand.

Earlier versions may have a yellow cover?
They come up for sale for anywhere from $75 - $125 asking price. Apparently there are errors. The same info is available at the end of PET parts manuals. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1424320824.jpg Example of a table of serial numbers. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1424320957.jpg |
That's awesome news! Too bad for the guys asking $$$ for their older editions.
Edit: I just pre-ordered a bunch of these as gifts. :D |
Just received my copy from Amazon.
Fully updated and full of information, a great buy on Amazon at the moment for $17!! |

If you look at the line for 911T US 9113100001-9113101252, the car in question is a few digits higher then 9113101252. I don't want to list the VIN as it is not my car. Is it just a clerical error in the book or? Any thoughts. Thanks, Rich |
Bob, maybe you should stick to 2 dancer paintings like Devas did and don't overcrowd it with 4.

Does this help? Direct from the Porsche's PET (look in the last pages). Don't ask me what the difference is between TE and TK because I have no clue. (K-Jetronic perhaps???)

Thanks guys. I am trying to determine if the car in question was originally a sporto or not.
The Red Book says the VIN's end at 9113101252 so the VIN in question ( lets say the VIN is 9113101260) does not exist? Rich |
For that sort of question, I'd suggest looking at the technical specs book for that year, not the Red Book.
Does the engine in the car have a type number for a sportomatic? Does the chassis have any of the modifications made for a sportomatic? JR |
Do you have the engine # and or the engine type? Engine type of 911.61 would be a sportomatic for the 'T'. Engine number is on a vertical web just the to right of the fan. Engine number would have a '9' in the 4th position. Type number (xxx/xx) would be forward of that on a horizontal surface.
Not sure if this is helping or making things more confusing. Quote:

javadog and 93nav.
The engine # and type are correct for a sportomatic. I just couldn't understand how the VIN for the car was higher then the highest VIN listed. I appreciate your help. I was hoping that the car was not originally a sporto but that was wishful thinking. Rich |
My copy of the new Red Book arrived by UPS last evening.
Beautifully done for a paperback, but of the high quality trade variety. Lots of color photos. I was able to solve a mystery on my '75 911 engine, #6451005, as I never got a consistent answer when I asked. It's a Carrera! Not sure of the significance of that as the S has the same specs for that year but a different band of serial numbers. Tom |
