Did all 911SC's have black window trim?
Which ones, if any, were chrome?
|
My 1979 Targa has chrome window trim, the targa emblem and 911SC emblem are also metal finished, the black trim came later I believe.
|
The clear anodized aluminum (not chrome) was available in 1978 and 1979. After that, black was standard and the only trim available.

I guess now the question is:
What was the standard trim for 78-79 anodised aluminum or black? Was black an option or standard? How to determine what was the original trim that the car left the factory with, if any? I always had this doubt also. |
Black was optional. Getting a COA would be the only way to know for sure what a car came with, although most cars probably have their original trim.

I am guessing bright trim is standard.
My '78 targa has all bright trim. The window sticker does not mention anything about the trim. |

The window trim wasn't chrome. It was polished aluminum that had been clear-anodized. It was available throught the 1979 model year. Black trim, which was satin black, not matt black, was standard in 1980 in the US and the clear anodized trim was no longer available. JR |
My Euro 79SC has all bright trim, windows and door handles.

On my ROW '79, black trim was listed as an option on its original build sheet.
|
Windshield trim, side window trim, and door handles were available in black or bright finish through 1979.
Bright finish was standard for '78-79 SC with black being a $200 option. Black is very common because it was often part of an option package. Bright finish door handles could be ordered separately from black window trim. In 1980 all 911 models went to Black window trim, door handles, Targa bands. This information is from the 1974-1989 Authenticity Guide by Mark S. Haab. |
Black or Not?
Thanks to all, this is a great Resource for the Oldies.

On my 78 it appears that the side windows are silver but it seems to be just faded as if you look at the inside of the window frames they are black
|
My 78 targa has the black trim option (275 dollar cost on the window sticker). Black are the targa bar, side window (vent) trim and door handles. Aluminum natural are the trim that holds the window seals (front and rear), and the outside trim on the top of the doors and the targa emblem.

My 1978 targa has the option, "Chrome Parts in Matte -Finished Black, Headlight Rings Exterior Color"
The side window trim, door handles, and targa bar are black, but the front glass, rear glass, and rear 911sc badge are trimmed in matte chrome. |
I have seen a lot of early SC's that had black anosized trim that has faded so badly over the years that it is no longer black. It turns a sort of purple first, then the color fades away. At some point, I think they started painting the trim but it was anodized for a while.
So, if some of the trim is not black on a car that had that option, that might be one explanation. Of course, some cars have had the trim changed too, so there's that. JR |
