So you're convinced that the guy who you spoke with is the Richard Mosley pictured on the Smokey Auto Sales webpage?

Well no actually. Since no one I know has actually seen him I have no idea what he looks like. I would be very surprised if that was actually him.

Do you think Smokey Auto Sales is involved in any way?

Or was he just using them, without their knowledge, as a front?

Wish some of these guys would the whole string before commenting. This was an elegant scam very, very professionally executed. Many would have fell for it, hook line and sinker. Kind of like a great magic trick...

I'm sorry and I'm really not trying to be rude but... Did you read the first post I made? I really do appreciate everybody's input but after this I'm going to resist answering questions that are already asked and answered.

In case I have not been 100% clear or I'm missing the point of McLovin's question:

Richard Mosley (or is it Moseley) and Smokey Auto Sales and the website Smokeyautomotive.com are all fronts for an elaborate scam that involves selling cars that they do not possess to people who do not do sufficient due diligence (like me). They do not operate out of 701 S French avenue Sanford Florida- it is the address of a small and unrelated used car business. They may be operating from virtually anywhere in the world.

If you do any business with them you will almost certainly get taken. Whoever they are, they are very clever, very convincing and very brazen.

jittsl - my estimation is that 99% of us are on your side and we feel for you. The main reason that this thread is getting so much attention is that it truly bothers honest people when there is such a brazen, aggressive, dishonest scam like this perpetrated. We want to see justice, we want the scumbag nailed, and we want to hear that you got your money back, even though we don't know you personally.

Totally understand your frustration at a few of the posts, but I feel most of us are thinking "geez, that could have happened to me". I know that I have rethought the process I went thru to buy my Porsche (coincidentally in Florida) and even though I was not scammed, I now realize that I was probably a bit too trustworthy during the process, and could have been scammed.

This. Quite an elaborate scam and aimed squarely at the Porsche Car Buying Public (I think that's us!). I just became far less trusting and far more likely to use PayPal with buyer protection for everything.

JT, I don't think anything else can be gained from responding to this post. You got some good information on the original dealer ad and have taught us all a lesson. This post has taken on a life on its own. The funny thing is three years from now someone will bring this post back to life and start it all over again. I would just let it go unless you have some new news. I wouldn't beat this dead horse anymore.

Good luck with Paypal I will never use them again to buy a car. I purchased a 911 on ebay using buy it now and used paypal for the $500 deposit. The seller insisted on a bank transfer I said I would come to Virginia to pick up the car in person he said not until I transfer the money. The bells went of and I felt that I was being scammed so again I said no I will come pick it up. He then said forget it I do not trust you imagine that he did not trust me. I said fine please send back my $500 he sent back $400 and said he was keeping $100 for his trouble. I called paypal and they said he told them the sale went through so they would not return my $100. I argued and argued but to no avail so I just gave up. Granted I was lucky enough to only loose $100 but imagine how many times he did this.

Late to the thread and sorry for your loss. The website is still live: SMOKEY AUTO SALES, INC. in Sanford, Florida

I just did a quick scan through the thread and did not see where anyone searched the corporate status of the company in Florida.

He lists his name as Smokey Auto Sales, Inc. on the website. I went to the Division of Corporation in Florida site (www.sunbiz.org - Home) and did not see a corporation listed by that name. Searched Richard Mosely and there are listings, but none with the Smokey name. Also searched the Fictitious Name (ie d/b/a name) and none show up. So basically, that company does not exist as far as Florida is concerned.

Technically, he would not be able to open a bank account unless the bank could verify the listing on sunbiz.org. You might want to go search sunbiz it if you have some other names on the payment wire and look at the wire information and try and track where it went.

Also, the attorney general in Florida is a pretty tough woman on crime. Pam Bondi. Here is her office site Florida Attorney General - Home Page I would try and get in touch with her office too.

PDACPA...This is an excellent and elegant scam. If you remotely think that picture is real, you are the type of person he is targeting. Everything is intended to suck people in.

Sorry if it's been mentioned before, but maybe you can try to buy another car from them with the authorities involved?
