73 1/2 cis cold starting issues
 

My 73 1/2 t does not like cold starts. I lift the throttle lever to full, as instructed by the manual, which starts the car at an extremely unsatisfactorily high engine speed. Then it dies. After 2 or 3 times it idles and I am able adjust the idle with the lever. I realize that there is no auxillary air valve (as in my 914 2.0). I do know that there is a warm air regulator and cold start valve. My experience with cold start valves tells me that they work only when really cold (i.e <40 degrees). Could it be the cold start valve or warm air regulator? When warm the car idles perfectly and runs smoothly. Thanks as always.

the cold start valve has already done it's thing if it started. the throttle has to be open a bit to close the micro switch on the throttle housing which allows the cold start valve to get power. you're concerned with how it runs after it starts. that's the warmup regulator's job. the hand throttle is just a manual gas pedal. they are adjustable so the idle speed is tolerable when started cold, or just set it after you start the car. the WUR has been superceeded to a different style on the 73/74 cars, and requires a fitting kit to install. if your WUR has a plastic hose attached to it with no visible screw-in fitting below it, you have the old style. sounds like your problem. the state of your tuneup has a lot to do with it also.
