Porsche now makes a Nav system for our old 911's

A nav system to retrofit to old Porsches, from BBC autos

BBC - Autos - Porsche GPS unit is a classic time machine

Before I clicked the link I was hoping it would be round to replace the clock. Pretty cool that they would even consider something like this for older cars.

I guess I can find my way to the grocery store....
Now if they'd fit a camera to eliminate the blind spot, that's something I could use!

Really not a bad price considering it's from both Porsche and Porsche classic.

And lets be frank, aftermarket Nav units are generally pretty poor.

Micro screen at odd/unhelpful angle? Pass.

I actually feel just the opposite - I think OEM units are pretty poor. Seldom updated and when they do they carry hefty price tags.

The Nav unit for my VW was a $2300 option and it wasn't as good as my ancient TomTom that currently has the most up to date maps out there. That said I use my Nexus 5 most of the time.

Hate social media apps but I do like Waze for navigation. People report accidents and cops and it maps traffic from other android phones in the area

I also use Waze/TomTom on the iPhone, but I've always been utterly infuriated with aftermarket Nav headunits.

The problem with aftermarket nav units is that they get outdated fast. Best bet for an older car is a phone in a cradle. My phone is actually more up to date than my new BMW nave unit. It's tough to beat Google maps.

That is a lot of cash when a droid or iPhone is just as good and it is built into your phone at no extra cost. All it would be is a back up GPS. I guess it would be OK for rich guys.

Worst POS GPS I ever saw was a factory Mercedes unit. It would have to improve to just suck.

Alas too true! The unit in my 2006 E350 is just like an old Magelan with no touchscreen... Yuk!
I recently received an "offer" from MB to update my map for just $299... ROTFL!!!

I suspect you didn't mean to include portable GPS systems.

I like it. But not for $1300. I have not seen any new radios that look correct in vintage Porsches. What I would really prefer is a cheaper version without the NAV. It has BT, microSD. Just replace the face with a digital face for tuning.

My 5 inch screen Garmin with lifetime maps and traffic warnings was about $150 new. I can move it from car to car, and it is way better and more informative than any OEM I have seen. I've looked at Acura, MB, bMW to name a few.
Info like current posted speed limit, next intersection name, next turn indicators, lane info in places like SFO and Houston on highways, etc, all at no added cost. Updating my maps right now, for about the fourth time in five years or so, as Austin is always changing, unfortunately.

I agree, "Sorry officer, I was looking down by my knee at the wristwatch sized Nav screen when I rammed you"..

I like to enjoy my drive in my older 911 and getting lost is part of the fun Maps are so much more fun. Save the GPS for when the family is trying to get somewhere in the suv.
Get out and drive!
