Looks like a beautiful car. IMHO 10-footers are the ideal drive-and-enjoy cars. Once they get much nicer, you start worrying about them too much.
Good luck,
Dave

I drained the oil yesterday and got about 14 quarts and had removed more then a gallon before. WAAAAAAY overfilled. I also pulled all the plugs and cleaned them, there was no oil on them which leads me to believe the valve guides are not contributing to the smoke. I wasn't able to drive it as I pulled the fan pulley off and discovered the fan hub is completely destroyed, it was almost completely sheared off. I'm going to work on a tempory fix and get some parts ordered.

what does a distressed 911 thats smoking going for these days?

You should be able to find a fan in the classifieds fairly reasonable. Im so glad you dumped all that oil. You may have got yourself a real deal on this car.

Interesting backstory.

I wonder if it was the same mechanic who poured in a few gallons of oil and told the old widow it's the valves.

He didn't seem like that kind of guy, he mainly works on motorcycles but told me he used to work on foreign cars including Porsches. When I mentioned the fan belt he did know about the shims (I didn't know what he was talking about) so I know he knew something about Porsches. I called the gal that had owned it and asked her about the tool kit, she mentioned something about her nephew had taken the car recently, she didn't say why but maybe he messed with it. I'm sure the average person does not know the car must be running and warm to check the oil. I'm a car guy and never heard that before owning one. I'm pretty sure he was thinking it needed valve guides, I don't know if he checked the oil or not. I took it for a long drive tonight and the smoke has just about disappeared. I had a 2.7 Targa last year and I can't believe how much faster this car feels, what a difference.

Great find -- not exactly a "barn find" but still looks like you found a good 911 to enjoy.

Hope to see you out at the AZPCA March 14 track event at Wild Horse Pass.

You can IGNORE any oil in the muffler and/or converter, it will burn off with driving and in the meantime it will do no harm that you can't live with.

And not to throw a wet blanket on things but your cabin heater blower doesn't work, and if you have auto-heat that to.

The fuses have been removed.

Got a fan if you need one. Pm me if interested.

I just find it amazing that old 911s are still coming out of the woodwork so frequently.

Flip time.

spb350 04-03-2015 03:35 PM

Yes I hate the flipper connotation but........................ I had been looking for a cabriolet for quite some time and picked up the Targa to tide me over. I can't believe how much I missed not driving a Porsche. I picked up this 88 Venetian Blue Cabrio earlier this week so the Targa has to go. Too bad as I think the Targa runs stronger then the Cab.
