question about distributor

I think I really goofed up when timing my cam shafts. I put the cam marks straight up and the distributor was pointing in this direction.

I think it should have been in this position now that I go back and look at it.

Please tell me I am wrong.

Didn't you use the 'Z1' notch on the crank pulley?

Warren I did use the 1z mark on the crank pulley. I never removed the distributor either so it is in the original spot. I must have mis-understood something I read. Both of these pictures where taken with the 1z mark lined up with the notch on the case.

The notch is the cutout seen at about 7oclock on the body of the distributor correct? I should be able to pull the chains and rotate the crank 360 degrees and should be good to go correct?

all I have to say is doh.

Osidak,

I can't really say for sure on SC distributors ... but all previous Bosch distributors use a sharp 'punch' mark to designate the #1 cylinder reference point, rather than the notch for locating the cap.

Warren,
Where is the sharp punch as I didn't see any such marking on my distributor. Is the first or second picture more correct? Is the mark on the side of the housing or the lip. I am sorry for all the questions but I have not found any good material to answer my questions on this matter.

you have it in ok. the rotor would point to the fan shroud for #1, and line up with the notch on the top edge of the dist body.

John,
That is a relief. I really didn't want to retime the cam shafts. When you say it should line up with the notch I assume you mean the rotor. That brings me to ask a really stupid question....What part of the rotor? Looking forward to you answer.

the tip where the spark comes off should sit right over, or real close to the notch on the top edge of the dist body that the cap sits on. as long as the cams are in the position where there's clearance on both #1 valves (after adjustment of course) you're safe.
