Pedal cluster, WTF is this......
 

So I wanted to take my pedal cluster out so I can clean up all the crap built up in there and also rebuild them. So I take the two bottom bolts out then work my way to the top one and for some reason my socket wont fit on the bolt. they act as studs if you go under the car and take off the protection pan you can remove the nut on the other side

Yep, Completely stock, they are all like this.

The original Non-Servo Pedal boxes used these bolts to hold the Master Cylinder which was fitted outside the passenger compartment and was concealed by the Rack Protection plate.

There was a hole in the floor the same size as the hole in the cluster housing and a push rod fitted to the pedal operated the master cylinder.

yup we have all been there and most likely will be there again;)

FYI, I just pulled my pedals over the weekend and tackled the removal of the roll pin using the drill method. It worked very well and when I stepped up to the third bit that I was going to use it went about a third of the way into the pin and hooked it at which point the pin started spinning in the hole and I was able to pull it out with the drill bit. I started with the first bit that was slightly larger in diameter than the hole and then went up one fractional size at a time. Nice and slow with a little tap magic on it.

I am reading the entire Bentley book and just read through the pedal cluster section today. It mentions taking off the access plate under the car to get at the nuts for the pedal cluster.

Don't feel bad. A lot of what Porsche did years ago looked a bit DIY. Those bolts are a good example.
Another example... Some earlier cars had cast iron weights in the front bumper to improve handling. ;)
