Stripped CV bolt, hacksaw to the rescue!!
I’m in process of pulling the engine and transmission on my 84 Targa.
I stripped one of the cv joint bolts while trying to remove it… I tried some vise grips, heat and a few other things but it was not budging, so I went right to the hacksaw… First, I put several of the cv bolts back on and tightened them down. I then went to work with the hacksaw and cut as close to the base of the bolt head as possible. I used a fresh hacksaw blade and a bit of 3:1 oil on the cut. Once I cut most of the head off, I then cut a slot into the remaining bolt head and tried to turn it with a flat head screwdriver. That did not work initially, so I started hitting the remaining bolt head with a hammer and chisel to get it to turn. Once it started turning, I was able to use the screwdriver to finish the job. When I pulled my engine and trans about three years ago I used this on at least 4 stripped CV bolts and a few other places around the drivetrain as well. Absolute huge time and effort saver.
They are the only device I have found that works every-single-time to remove bolts with internally or externally stripped heads. Tap them on with a hammer, insert 3/8 drive and out it comes. This is now an essential tool to have on hand when working with 40 year old cars, especially with Porsche having so many allen wrench bolt heads. ![]() ![]() They were $50 at AZ but cheaper online. Ah, the pesky CV bolts, always use a new or as new allen and clean out the head of any debris so the allen can be fully inserted otherwise it will strip.

I've had the same issue with 12 point internally wrenching bolts. I didn't find them to be an improvement over allen bolts.

In another thread regarding stuck/stripped CV bolts, someone suggested using a small pipe wrench on it.
I just did this, and it worked great - had one bolt that was tight enough to strip out, but as the other bolts came out without too much trouble, I figured it wasn't seized, just couldn't turn it with the hex socket. Easy solution.
