Help needed with chassis number

I have a chassis number mystery that I hope my fellow Pelicanites can help me solve. It is a barn find 911 that I've been restoring. When sanding down the tub, I found the original chassis number under seven different layers and colors of paint. Looking towards the rear of the car, the number is on a small raised section to the left of the trunk, close to the left inner fender (looking back). The imprint reads 911/600438*
It also has an aluminum VIN tag riveted to the inner fender with a completely different number, indicating it to be a 1975 911S.

Any help to decipher the stamped number will be greatly appreciated!

Are you sure that slash isn't a number? It should be a number indicating the year.

Those two numbers should be the same! Remove the right hand knee pad and look for the production # stamped on the lower dash frame under the radio opening. The production # is coded for the year, and should help me decide if the stamped VIN or the aluminum tag VIN is more correct. You can email me photos if you want to do it privately.

Help needed with chassis number.

Wow! I so appreciate the rapid responses. I am as baffled by the slash. There is a space between the 911 and / and numbers. The picture is no that clear, but shows what I see. The only other option is it being a 7 but there is really not evidence of that being the case.

To djpateman's suggestion, I'll pull the knee guard this weekend.

I am far from an expert - so YMMV.

Porsche used 6 digit VIN numbers for 911 thru July 1967, but the last ones started with a '5'. Nothing starting with a '6'.

In August 1967 Porsche started using 8 digit VIN numbers.

The 912 was the same, except the last 6 digit VIN's started with '55'.

What does the rest of your front trunk look like? How many batteries/compartments? Pics would definitely be helpful.

Could it be a front clip?

Would a factory front clip be marked in a certain way? Just a thought.

Thank you 93nav-you are an officer and a gentleman.
But now I am even more in the dark...
I'll report back after the weekend on the numbers under the dash.

That "/" looks to me to be a "7" in the photo which is the only logical thing it could be as there were only digits used in the stamped VINs of mid-year cars which this is purported to be.

A "7" would make the chassis a 77 model year.

The following "6" indicates it is a Carrera.

The "0" indicates a coupe.

The final digits are the production sequence.

Regardless of the above, the stamped number and the number on the aluminum tag must match as djpateman has posted.

You have an issue that needs to be resolved.

Now, all that being said, please tell us just what that car is supposed to be. Even though you implied it's supposed to be a 75S because you posted about the aluminum tag, it's still unclear that is what you expected. Additionally, you say there is "no evidence" that it is a 77 but without knowing the condition of the car (has it been modified?) we can't help you determine if that assessment is correct. There are certain things found on 75's that don't exist on 77's and vice versa. Maybe some photos and descriptions would help.

When do emissions kick in there? Maybe someone was trying to cover up it being a '77 with all the paint.

Just a thought.

daveE - I love your nerfarious conspiracy theory. Unfortunately the entire vehicle was painted 7 different layers - black - white primer- red- white primer-metallic blue-gray primer-metallic red.

If the VIN is 911760XXXX it is a Rare Euro 3.0 Carrera! You hit the jackpot if it is.

Just looked closer at your truck tag with the paint removed and it matches my '77 Carrera 3.0 for font and number spacing. Euro cars should also have a tag on the A Pillar of the windshield and an aluminum tag on the inside passenger Fender of the truck area. It maybe behind carpet in front of the shock tower.

If the correct engine is with your car it should have a *666 or *667 serial Number and 930/02 stamped to the right of the fan behind the sending unit on a horizontal surface.

A '77 should have a power brake booster too. Is the car a stripped shell? Have you disassembled it or did you buy it as a project? '77 also have a center console in front of the shifter. What does the speedometer read? 300kph or 180mph?

Flat6pac 03-07-2015 03:36 AM

I've had a euro 77 150 hp that didn't have a vacuum booster for the brakes. The lines were through the chassis but never hooked up

That slightly odd spacing of the numbers on the stamp in the trunk floor matches what a 77 Carrera 3.0 stamp looks like. There's a little extra room on both sides of the 7 and the 7 is stamped slightly lower than the rest of the numbers.

Have a look at the production number under the kneepad and look for numbers written in grease pencil on the insides of the door sheet metal and under the dash pad on the left side.

Let me know if it had power brakes at one point. A '77 Carrera 3.0 would have had them.

I apologize in advance for the slight hijack. I am also trying to solve a VIN mystery on a '74/'76 911 tub. Can you figure the VIN number if you know the production number on the inside lower dash?

Thanks,
Tom

Porsche can, you can't.
