What do 8-way seats do??
 

OK< Bear with me a min -

I have a 'new to me ride' and the seats don't appear to work. Suspect they lack a power source -

but if they DID work, what do they do?

I'm assuming 2 of the 8 way adjustment are 'fore' and 'aft', but what do the other buttons do?

And more specifically - are ANY of them actuators for something that will fill in the 'lumbar hole' that these bad boys have? And, more importantly, is there anything to be done to help fill the hole and support my sagging lumbar region???

2nd or 3rd question - what at these? Sport seats? 964 stock seats? other???

The adjustment for the seat-back recline is on the front, middle and sticks up from the inboard side, the fore / aft is a bar underneath.

Forward and back. Up and down, tilt seat base , and tilt seat back. Getting the seat in the most comfortable position only improves the quality of the ride.

Can't say for certain what the seats are w/o pictures. I believe there have been more than one type of 8-way seats.

Those are not 8 way...those are 4 way...the switches adjust front seat height and rear seat height...you found the manual levers for seat sliding for and aft and rear seat back recline below the front of seat...

These are 8 way adjustors. The front up/down moves the front of the seat up or down, just like your seats and the rear up/down moves the rear of the seat like yours. The front forward/rear button slides the whole seat fore and aft, and the rear one tilts the backrest.

They are regular, non-sport seats offered from 1985-1994 in the 911, 964, 944 and 968 models.

It is possible your seats aren't getting power. It is also possible that the switch plate is bad. Or you just blew a fuse. Check fuses first!

They also made 10 and 12-way seats, not sure what the extra ways are for. I would imagine lumbar, but I don't know. Don't know what year they became available. Some had heat too.

The blank rectangle in that one is for heat, which that doesn't have.

I have a set of the 12 way with heat sitting in my garage and the extra 4 way over the 8 way is for power lumbar in and out and also to move the lumbar up and down in the seat back.

My 8 way driver's seat is in perfect condition. Leather is fantastic. Perfect in every way ....except for the two broken switches that are a total pain to replace. Soon to be dumped for Sparco seats.

Now, the question is, should I try to mod these seats to provide some better lumbar support, or sell them and get some recline-tuner seats that fit me better?

In an old Excellence there was an advert from a place making inflatable lumbar support for the stock seats - I'll have to dig that up and see if they are still in business!

And - If I were to list these guys for sale - what are they worth?

Since we are on a diet on this car, removing these heavy seats for something a bit more sporty / lightweight that fits better seems to make some sense....

re: weight - I'm guessing these are around 40lbs?

I added lumbar to my stock seats. Love the stock seats but a previously herniated L5-S1 means I'm picky about my lumbar support. I found an inflatable lumbar support on Amazon and inserted it between the seat back springs and foam. Easier than it looks. On these seats the center section of the seat back is a separate piece and clipped to the side bolsters. You can separate the center section carefully for access. I cut the cover off a cheap three ring binder. The flexible plastic type just to have a backer for the lumbar support. Just seemed like that would be better than cloth and foam against the springs. Slid that and the support in from the side. Ran the tube that connects the inflation bulb out the rear corner and just let it lay in the rear footwell. If I want to make an adjustment I can easily reach back and find the bulb.

If I had to do it again I would locate a lumbar support that is just a bladder. Mine has foam wrapped around it and fully deflated may still be too much for some users. -J

Mine was operated on in 2001 and I've been great since, however, the stock seats and their lack of support for that area gives me some discomfort. your solution sounds ideal - I'll have to see about doing a similar kind of 'surgery' for the seat as you describe!
