Shifter coupler help

I plan on replacing all the bushing in my shifter linkage. How do I replace the 2 shoulder bushings in the shifter coupler inside the tunnel in front of the back seats. Does the transverse pin through the bushings push out? If so do I need some heat? I have the coupler out of the car.

Steve,

No heat needed!

Yes, the cross-pin pushes out ... big bench vise or press and a couple of sockets ... one socket slightly smaller in OD than the pin, and another deep socket large enough for the pin to slip inside easily ... on the other side!

Steve,
I just did mine a few weeks ago and it made a hugh difference. If you do a search on shift improvements I think you'll find some good advise. I held my coupler over a vise open just enough for the pin to fit through, then I hit it with a 1/4" flat round chidel. It popped right out. Also, one of the old threads lead me to a quick trick to replace the bushings. Soak the new ones in ice water for 15 minutes and if need be heat the coupler a little. I did the ice gig and they slid right in. Good luck.
