Steering Wheels and Knobs
Hello,
I am planning to change my wheel to a Momo. I also plan to match it with a Momo knob. I understand that I will also need to buy an adapter to mount the wheel. Does anyone have any advise on procedures? I am sure I can "wing it" if necessary but I would much rather have a heads up on what to expect. Also, if anyone has similiar info on changing the shift knob. I am guessing that the stock unit will just spin off. Will the Momo unit just spin on or does it require an adapter? Hi Calspeed,
If you order your Momo wheel from Pelican, just order the adaptor at the same time. Most other places you can do the same. Just ensure you order the one suitable for your car model. Again depending upon your model the shift knob may have a plastic cap on the top (has the shift pattern moulded into it) that you pry off first, this gives you access to turn it off. The Momo shift knobs tend to have their own universal system which should fit your model. Cheers Mark

Sorry, to add to that, you will need to remove part of the old horn assembly from the old wheel and screw it on to the new Momo. There will be a screw hole already pilot drilled for this. It will be very obvious how to do it.
I think 101 Projects has a write up on it. If not do a search of the Board and the Tech articles as I'm sure there are many threads on this common mod. Post some before and after pics when your done.

I have no knowledge of the wheel adaptor, as my car came with one on it. But the shift knob just pulls off; or at least mine did. The momo knob has it's own mounting system which is just a couple of setscrews and a threaded trim ring.

When you attach the wheel with the 6 allen head screws - take your time and be super careful not to scratch them up. Its really easy to start rushing this part of the job since you are so close, and then you will be disatisfied with the little nicks when you look at your wheel.

what year car do you have? On 87+ 911s, the top of the shift knob prys off to allow access to the nut which holds the knob on the shaft. On pre-87 cars, the shift know is held on with a 'crush washer'. In order to remove the shift knob, you have to 'carefully' hit it upward with a hammer.

Hey folks...
Thanks for all of the great information. As per usual removing the knob is alittle different then expected. I have a 1985 Carrera and I now know about the removal technique. Also, thanks for the info on the steering wheel. I will watch for the turn signal cancelling ring. As well, I will take my time to tighten down the wheel. Small nicks on the allen heads would drive me nuts. ![]() Calspeed |

dealing with that crush ring can suck. I eventually took a hacksaw to the knob.
