SC brakes or Carrera brakes
is there a difference between an SC brake versus a Carrera brake? If yes how could I tell one from another? I am trying rebuild the front calipers and I would like to know in order to buy the correct parts.
Thanks Tom |

You found your answer, but the short version is the calipers are essentially the same but with a spacer between the caliper halves to fit around the wider Carerra rotor. Same size pistons, and same rebuild kit.

Correction! The rear calipers on 84-89 are 42mm vs 38mm for SC so the rear rebuild kit is different.
FYI, the 42mm gives more rear brake and is a nice upgrade but I would install prop valve for rear locking concerns. Porsche installed one on all 84 on. |

Unless you plan to track your car, the SC brakes are excellent, and "upgrading" to Carrera brakes adds unnecessary unsprung weight.

I'd like to know what the actual weight difference is... Anyone know?

I did a quick search on shipping weights for the rotors:
1978 - 1983 SC front rotor = 11.50 lbs 1984 - 1989 Carrera front rotor = 12.05 lbs So we're looking at .55 lbs difference per side for the rotors. Not much, but I do get that every bit counts with unsprung weight. I'd still do the swap, just for the additional heat dissipation.

I would keep the car as original as possible unless there are real benefits gained by changing it.
You could research brake pads that will suit your style of driving and make more noticeable improvements in this way. |
