Worn out transmission

I own a 1982 911 SC. My transmission is in pieces at the mechanic shop and my mechanic is telling me it would be more cost effective to buy a complete rebuild from Vertex Auto. I live in Portland Oregon and Vertex is in Florida.
I had a complete engine rebuild 2 years ago and now the transmission is toast. I bought the car with my heart and not my brain. I still like the car and want to get the transmission rebuilt. Does anybody have any suggestions? I love the car and plan on keeping it.

Rennsport Systems in Portland. Don't buy a vertex gearbox. Search and you will see why.

What Matt said. Steve at Rennsport is the man!

915 build

Another excellent 915 specialist is John Walker in Seattle...

As long as your gears are good, I would rebuild what you have.

If you buy a "rebuilt" trans, you have no idea of it's history, abuse, or parts quality.

What was wrong with your trans that caused you to remove it?

Steve (Rennsport) or Kurt (Marque motors) are straight shooters. They will do you right. If cost was not a primary consideration, I would add Rothsport.

Plus the car is worth more if you have a matching numbers transmission. Do not buy the Vertex, bad idea.

What is unrebuildable to one guy, is a normal repair to others.

Rothsport in Sherwood does transmissions, too. A friend had his done there, said it has never been better.

Lots of choices in the Pacific NW.

I'd be interested to hear exactly what is wrong with the gearbox. To remanufacture one can run several thousand dollars. But you could buy a "good used" 915 for $1500 that still needs another $1500 in work to make it right. Better the devil you know...

Get a second opinion for sure.

I am an owner/keeper type.

My '81 SC is at 312k miles now.

Second gear box rebuild.

This time around I sunk some real $$$ but very worth it to me.

Had the WEVO machine work done for steel insert for Main/Pinion bearing support and axle bearing. ~$1,400.00 for that.
Plus the "big" MS/PS bearings $
CMS 1 piece retainer.
Then the normal wear items, synchro's/dogs etc.

Not a cheap ordeal but quality work and I own the car...
(Engine is still original! Waiting to see what breaks)
