MidWest R-Gruppe Event

Anybody else sick of viewing photos and reading about the exploits of the West Coast R-Gruppe guys? <i>(actually, I could look at those photos all day long but ;) ....)</i> Well, it's time to do something about it - a MidWest R-Gruppe Event!

It's official, this <u>will</u> happen in Spring 2003. It's in the preliminary planning stages so a date and location have not been selected. The plan is for a 1 day event to test the waters. We'll find a place to meet (I'm thinking Indy might be appropriate and a central location), find some good twisties and then go out for a nice long drive.

Please send me an eMail or PM (or just reply to this post) if you are interested and I'll add your name to the list. This is open to both R-Gruppe members and Early 911 owners in general. -- Curt

Curt, for the sake of letting prospective members know what there in for, I think you had better outline the Incoming Blood ordaining rituals and RGruppe psalms which prospective members must memorize and swear allegence to.

Only after all the specified steps have been performed and passed with approval of Herr Gruppmeister will the new RGruppe member then be able to begin to know the joy of being in our"merry band of misfits"

They will then be ready to start learning the essence and understand what "wolfpack" driving is really all about.

There is also a shipment coming to you of Black crushed velvet hooded robes a-la "grim reaper" style, in various sizes. Pls let Herr Gruppmeister know if they fit o.k.

Good Luck with your first Rguppe "Tour"

Cheers!

<i>"for the sake of letting prospective members know what there in for, I think you had better outline the Incoming Blood ordaining rituals...."</i>

Shhh, shhh, shhh. We don't wanna scare 'em off before they commit! ;) And Sam, thanks for the additional photos  Remember, paybacks are hell ... -- Curt

Cornpanzer 10-27-2002 12:47 PM

Count me in Curt. Although I am not an RGruppe member, I would be glad to help out anyway I can. If we put some effort into this thing maybe we too will be able to flood the message boards with pictures of our event;)

This sounds interesting...please keep me informed

racemor 10-28-2002 09:52 AM

My parents are from Indiana, does that help me?

Curt, keep me posted on this too. I know I am not mid-west based but as far as I know we don't have a Southeast R-Gruppe leader. Not yet anyway. ;) Hopefully by Spring I will be able to recite the honorable chants and gain the favor of Herr Guppemeister.

Indy is about as far as I would want to drive I think. Cincinnati would cut a couple of hours off if there were any East Coasters wanting to make the trip.

Tom

cegerer 10-28-2002 10:23 AM

Tom, I'm going to compile the list over the next few months and then try to find a spot that is as centralized as possible (and has some worthwhile roads!). Indy was just one thought. One thing for sure, we - as a group - are spread out and some pretty good travel time will be required no matter what. We'll see what happens .... -- Curt

Randy W 10-28-2002 11:03 AM

It appears from Sam's photos that a major R Gruppe tradition is to stuff yourself with as much food as possible after driving as fast as possible ;) .

Curt, I hope you have a restaraunt (Mid-West Rib/Steak house?) that you are planning on including on your route!

n8marx 10-28-2002 11:32 AM

I'm not an R-Gruppe member, or even an early car owner for that matter. Perhaps you would allow a guy with an '86 Carrera attend in order to properly "educate" me to the finer points of early car-dom?

Groupies already...?

<i>"Curt, I hope you have a restaraunt (Mid-West Rib/Steak house?) that you are planning on including on your route!"</i>

Well, I have personal experience with the Mansfield County Sheriff Department just outside of the Mid-Ohio Sportscar Course. Free room & board for the night if you drive fast enough. Maybe we can get a 'Gruppe' rate. :) -- Curt

Sure, we will always need someone to wash the cars....;) hehhe

Halm 10-28-2002 02:36 PM

Let me second Racemor's suggestion of Cincinnati. That is a 500 mile haul from here but I would be up for it. A little further south and east would be even better.

Just another unsolicited suggestion. . . :D

cegerer 10-28-2002 02:44 PM

Cincinnati's out - way too close to Cornpanzer's house! :D -- Curt

racemor 10-28-2002 04:50 PM

Halm, that would be cool if you went, I'll bet you would have the only car to attend both the Western and Midwest meetings. Your car's p.o. did go to Cambria, right?

Cornpanzer 10-28-2002 05:32 PM

Cinti would be fine by me Curt!!! :D One advantage to that is that I would be happy to do all the homework for routes, places to eat and lodging. Whatever works out works out! I'm flexable.
Dave C

Halm 10-28-2002 05:40 PM

Racemor, In a quick search, I could not find it in any previous events. It was home in NC when they held this years event and couldn't find much in '01.

cegerer 10-28-2002 05:50 PM

Cornpanzer: <i>"I'm flexable."</i>

Yeah, right. I would be too if I had a 20 minute drive to get there! Look, we're all going to share equally in the misery of 5 hours of travel time and be happy about it! :D -- Curt

Well well....we see your true colors there Curt! Personally I ENJOY driving my early 911 for 5 hours. Maybe that just makes me more of an enthusiast.......;) Oh yeah, I remember the last time I invited you down here to Ohio......waaahhh, it might rain.... hehe. Looking forward to the event wherever it might be.

Jim Garfield 10-28-2002 06:42 PM

Curt, how about a 6hr drive to Watkins Glen and you would get some East coast
cars too.

cegerer 10-29-2002 05:57 AM

Watkins Glen, huh? I love that place. Great Porsche heritage. Fantastic roads. The International Motorsport Research Library. Etc, etc. And we could even do timed laps on the 'old street circuit'! ;) Seriously though, that's got real potential. -- Curt

724doorE 10-29-2002 10:20 AM

Sounds like a blast... now if only i could convince the wife to take a ride in the 911... oh well, she'd just tell me to slow down anyway!!!:D

cegerer 11-12-2002 06:54 AM

Update:

Response has been very good. Current thinking is an early meet somewhere in southern Michigan or northern Indiana/Ohio - possibly Indy. Probably 3 weeks before the 'Big One' at Monterey. This would put us in April with - obviously - questionable weather (could be 75 degrees and sunny or could be snowing). We could set a Saturday date with either Sunday or the following weekend as a rain date.

Also, preliminary plans are underway for a <u>second meet</u> at Watkins Glen on the June 6-8 weekend. Click here for info:

not a member, but I'd be more than willing to make the trip and bring my roommate and his 72 911 in tow.

cstreit 11-12-2002 07:47 AM

Hmm...

I've got to plate and insure the racecar in order to break in the motor...

No heat or amenities though... WHat about the Chicago area, I'd be there for sure! Indy's a bit far to travel in the race car...

Cornpanzer 11-12-2002 11:03 AM

Man, any other weekend and I would be there for sure. Unfortunatly I will be in LA on June 8th. Dave

cegerer 11-12-2002 12:01 PM

Chicago area is a possibility Chris. Although for me it would have to be somewhere that didn't require actually driving through that traffic jam they call the Chicago metro area!!! -- Curt

For the past two years, the Musikstadt, Kentucky, and Southern Indiana regions of PCA have hosted a get together called "The Visit" at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY. This was to celebrate the connection between Porsche and Corvette designer. Last year, Bruce Anderson (yes, Bruce the author), Tom Charlesworth (PCA Head Tech) and Bob Miller (PCA Prez)were there, along with about 60 cars, including a museum quality 904 and speedster, and Bob Akin's 962. A dyno was set up in the parking lot. We got to tour the Corvette plant while the visiting Corvette guys didn't.

The 2003 event is in the planning stages but so far is listed as being on the first weekend in May. My inside info says that they are planning a bigger event next year with a celebrity speaker for the banquet.

I'd like to suggest that this event be considered for the Mid West R-Gruppe get together - if not, plan on comming down! More info will be available at www.corvet****seum.com under events, "The Visit 3.0"

Jim, I've heard of this event. To be honest, I've always thought it quite strange that Porsche guys would meet at the Corvette museum. I must be missing something here. What is the connection????????? -- Curt

slammed1000 11-14-2002 03:17 AM

why not organize a meet at putnam park near indy for a track day/gettogether/picnic. the track is nice and can be rented for about $3500.00 a day i think. you get 20-30 people that want to run their cars there at $150-200.00 for the day and have a nice car show type get together. schedule a nice drive through the country side and it should be quite a nice day. just my 2cents....

cstreit 11-14-2002 05:50 AM

Cegerer,

What sort of venue are you looking for?

I agree with the Chicago Metro traffic being a hassle for a lot of people. If we have a lot of Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois people a good bet might be south Chicago, but not such a great area for lots of expensive cars...

I certainly could coordinate something west of Chicago that provided a good parking area and amenities, or, for a more central location, Northern Indiana (near the lake) would provide a good place that's off major interstates for everyone... Indiana Dunes Area.

I'll be there if I can... Depends on distance for me, 5 hours in a racecar on public roads might be a bit much, but if it turns out to be closer, I'm definitely game(y).

cegerer 11-14-2002 11:05 AM

We're just looking for a place to meet that is surrounded by some <u>interesting driving roads</u> with a few stops along the way. If the 'place to meet' happens to be something more than just a mundane parking lot (like maybe the infield at the Indy Speedway or some type of event or whatever??), well, that's all the better. I don't invision a DE event included in this since it would take way too much organization and time. I'm looking at a 1 day event to test the waters and see what kind of response we get. Based upon that, I'm sure we'll all have a better idea on what/where/when/how to plan the 2nd event.

BTW, what's going on at Gingerman this Spring? There's some nice roads around there. We could shoot up along the coast of Lake Michigan thru Saugatuck, Holland and Grandhaven or something like that? -- Curt

cstreit 11-14-2002 03:53 PM

Well the driving roads are okay... Lots of local law enforcement though. Used to go riding on the Ducati all the time up there...

Gingerman offers a lot of track days to people, but impossible to rent on the weekends...

The best driving around here I know of is Indiana Dunes Area, arund Starved Rock state park in Illinois, and in Wisconsin...

Hmmm... Interesting stops...

We used to do an "Alphabet Tour" in Wisconsin on bikes... Many roads named with letters and lots of twisties... Just started on one letter and wound around to the next... GREAT fun! THis is something I could help plan, and would even consider a multi-day event if enough people were interested.

cstreit 11-19-2002 06:09 PM

any thoughts on "The Midwest R-Gruppe Alphabet Drive"?

cegerer 11-20-2002 02:51 AM

It sounds fun to me, Chris. -- Curt

old_skul 11-20-2002 05:42 AM

Let me third the notion for Cincinnati. (Fourth?) It's a little bit of a drive for me, but I'm not in the RGruuuuupe age range anyway, so hmpf.

Besides, since part of the gig is getting food, we can all descend upon some unsuspecting Cincinnati Chili parlor and get some 5-ways.

(For the uninitiated: a 5-way is chili, spaghetti, beans, onions, and shredded cheddar. And the chili isn't like anything you've ever had before.)

Eric Mckenna 01-02-2003 05:56 PM

Yes have it some place close where all of us Ohio fella's came come.

Eric

Plays with cars 01-02-2003 07:10 PM

Doesn't sound like the location of this road fits into any of the venues suggested so far, but if anyone has to travel anywhere near this to get to the meet, it's worth the effort. Hwy 26 in eastern Ohio where is runs through the Wayne Nat'l forest is absolutely perfect for spirited driving. I got introduced to this road on a PCA club tour last fall. 40+ miles of tight twisties, posted at 55mph with numerous 15-30mph corners. The best part is that if there is any local traffic, you can just slow down until they turn off to pursue their mundane lives, then continue on your joyous way. With more than 40 miles of twisties, the break is actually welcomed so you can relax a little. During our hour plus on this road there was limited local traffic and no police seen.

cstreit 01-02-2003 07:13 PM

Well an interesting thought... If you had it at the Southern tip of Lake Michigan, it would sort of be in the center point between Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin... No more than 2-3 hours for anyone I would think. If you do it before the really warm season, there would be plenty of parking at the beach/state park areas...

I can see the headlines...

Germans invade the Dunes!
