SURVEY: Who has the highest mileage without ANY rebuild?

I'm curious. Who has highest mileage without needing ANY type of engine rebuild? I'd be interested in knowing the current mileage, type of 911, and whether or not you "push" the car (race, auto cross, etc.). People with rebuilds are welcome too, of course, just state at what mileage the rebuild needed to be done. I consider a rebuild to be ANY type of rebuild (top end, bottom end, full, etc) for what it's worth.

TIA,

Bill Wagner

Probably on the low end...

1982 911SC
168,000
Daily driver but quickly
Some Porsche to Porsche action on the streets, nothing crazy...and crapping on riceboy racers...

hoping to go 250K, and I will reward her with a full rebuild, 3.2L cyl and pistons...

Probably on the low end too:

1973.5 911T 2.4 (CIS) with at least 176,000*

* the odeometer wasn't working when I bought the car (!).

But with a an engine currently being prepared for this oil-leaking high miler, I doubt it will get to 180,000.

198,800 and going strong! I expect another 100K before a rebuild (I hope!). 1988 Carrera 3.2.

not my car, but offhand the highest i've heard of was in the neighbourhood of 230,000 miles. this was on an early 1980s 911 that was driven a lot on the highway. nice guy too, sorry i can't remember more info, this was a while ago.

offhand, when we were searching for cars, i came across a 1976 924 that had 300,000+ documented miles on the engine... no rebuild.

highest i ever heard of on any Porsche was 600,000+ miles on a 1970 914... that was with just plain maintenance.

there was some talk about high mileage 911s on a British BBS a few years back. i believe someone had in the neighbourhood of almost 300,000 AMAZING no-rebuild miles on their 911. search the internet and you can find the specifics as to how they took care of it.

In this month's 911 & Porsche World Magazine, a guy wrote in saying that he has 302,000 miles on his 1990 C2. No rebuilds, but he said he had the engine resealed due to oil leaks. He must have a LONG commute.

According to my recollection (too lazy to go downstairs) the hallowed Bruce Anderson (choir sings) book tells a story of a daily driver-weekend racer that threw a rod when the driver missed a downshift in a hillclimb event. The car had 350,000 miles.

Anyway, Bruce's friend apparently was servicing an SC with 455,000 miles. He predicted seeing mul;tiple SCs over a half-million miles. Get this: Bruce said he and his friend (also a Porsche shop owner) had (at the time of print) NEVER rebuilt an SC motor because it wore out.

There's AMAZING. It would be impossible had those clever Germans not already done it.

I bought my 85 Carrera with 160,000 miles on it. Since it is my daily driver, it now has 238,000 with no major problems. The PO told me it has the original engine. He used to drive it between San Francisco and Los Angeles for business.

I hit triple digits at least once a week. (On Highway 280 if you live in the CA Bay Area). In the past six years I've only had to replace the battery, a starter, brake pads, and a couple set of tires.

The car runs strong with only a minor oil leak. The fun-to-value ratio is sky high. I only paid $12K for it. Can't beat it.

1981 911SC that had 167000 miles on it when I bought it in January. I had a rebuild (top and bottom) done because of oil leaks and slight power loss. There were no broken studs, and everything but the #8 nose bearing was good. The PO autocrossed and did a few DE events. I also autocross it, as well as driving it at well over 120 MPH 3 times this year. It does seem to get rather hot during autocross events, but it runs cool the rest of the time.

I have no way to really confirm this but my 1974 has 237K. The PO owned it since 1979 and explained that he had not re-built it and the mileage was correct. I tend to believe him because he is a very laid back guy that bought the car because he liked the color.(I don't think he ever drove it over 70mph)

I sure hope it wasn't re-built within the first five years. It still has the original valve covers.(turbo style have not been added) Most of the typical upgrades have not been completed.

And yes, it is a 2.7 liter engine. Go figure. What I was thinking when I bought it? Uh, that's a sweet looking car! I keep my fingers crossed and save for the upgrades and an eventual re-build.

Its not just the cars. I have just finished reading a book titled "The restoration of Black Six" (more or less the correct title, its at home and I am not!) which is a book on the restoration of one of the last flying ME-109 aircraft. This was done by many volunteers in England with help by the Brit Airforce and the War Museum.

What really impressed me was that upon tearing the DB engine down, almost every part in the motor was not only useable, but the crank and rods were still STANDARD sized and required only new bearings to refit!

You need to remember that this was a wartime engine, with its being at full power much of the time, maintenance when able and being shot at by our people. This is really a tribute to the German engineers and mechanics and the fact that they could produce this quality of machine work even during the intense bombing that shook the country from 1941 until the end of the war.

Wish I had a warehouse full of FW-190's sitting besides a few hundred 356 cars as well! Would be a happy person. Right now will have to settle for a couple of 911's!

The last time this thread popped up, there was a car on eBay with 500,000 miles on it. It was an SC (of course!), and totally unrestored - that car looked seriously worn. The seller wrote that he didn't even change the oil, just added some more every once in a while...

I had an '82SC, sold it at 207,000 miles and it was going strong as hell. Excellent oil pressure, excellent temp. Never drove on the track. Took it out for about 3 hours on a Friday and/or Saturday afternoon and evening. Ran it hard almost the whole time. Particularly remember one night at about 11pm. Going through La Tuna canyon pretty quickly and then back up through Verdugo and Glendale, Burbank, and Toluca Lake. It was going about 90mph through Verdugo, revving like crazy. Pulled up next to a new M Coupe and had a little drag. Basically tied, as this was the 240hp, not the 315hp M. Every time on the freeway between 115 and 140 mph. Never any short distance driving. Always took it out for at least 1.5hrs and warmed it up over about 30 minutes (RPM under 3k) and then almost constant redline shifting after that. What a wonderful car. Am currently 911-less , though I do have a 356C Cab. needing some paint FOR SALE. Please contact if interested. I would REALLY like to get back in a 911. I would love a 1970 2.2 911S Coupe, but am open to all early 911S's, 911E's, and '81-'83 SC Coupes, heck, even a G50 3.2 Coupe maybe. Let me know, will negotiate and/or trade. If you know of someone looking for a 356C Cab or a 356 resto project, please give them my email: ytnuklr@aol.com, or send me a PM. Gracias mucho.

over 211,000 miles. Uses about 1 quart every 3500 miles. Extensive autocrossing including 2 Divisional championships and a 2nd place in the 2000 Divisional championship. Rallycross class champion, taking 1st in class at every outing and 2nd overall at one event. About 25 trips through the 1/4 mile. Spin the tires leaving every traffic light.

Oh, it's not the 911 though. 1998 Dodge Neon R/T.

I'm definately in the race. My car has 245,000 and had the rebuild just 18,000 ago. That makes 227,000 before needed a top end. As for driving...not sure about the PO but I'm just now getting the tach up to 5K without panicking.

Technically I'm out. My '77 was rebuilt at about 60k.

It now has 242k, so about 182k on the rebuild.

Runs great, I think it will go forever.
